🦁 California's oldest zoo — and it's right in the heart of Eureka.
Sequoia Park Zoo has been open since 1907, making it the oldest zoo in the state and one of the smallest accredited zoos in the country. It sits inside a 60-acre old-growth redwood forest, alongside Eureka's largest public playground and a duck pond — so a visit doubles as a walk in the woods.
While you're there, don't miss the Redwood Sky Walk, located right inside the zoo, where you can experience the forest canopy from a whole new perspective. The zoo is also home to red pandas, including resident favorite Saffron.

📍 Point St. George — Where the Land Runs Out and the History Runs Deep

Just north of Crescent City sits one of the most dramatic and overlooked spots on the California coast. Wide open beach, grassland trails, tide pools full of sea stars, and views that remind you exactly how wild this coastline is.

On a clear day, look six miles offshore and you'll spot the St. George Reef Lighthouse sitting out on the Dragon Rocks — one of the tallest lighthouses in California. It was built after the steamship Brother Jonathan struck the reef on July 30, 1865, taking 225 of its 244 passengers with it. Construction took nearly a decade, and the light wasn't lit until 1892. It's been a landmark of this coastline ever since.

The beach itself is free, uncrowded, and worth an afternoon. Bring the dog, explore the tide pools, walk the bluff trails, and keep your eyes on the horizon. 🌊

Most people drive right past it on Highway 199 without stopping. The Smith River — the longest undammed river in California — is running clear and cool just a short drive from our front gate, and Redwood Rides Adventure Outfitters will put you right on it.
Their signature "Redwoods by River" trip floats you through a cathedral of 300-foot redwoods in an inflatable kayak, paddling some of the cleanest water on the continent. It's genuinely mellow enough for first-timers and kids, and genuinely beautiful enough that experienced paddlers keep coming back. Half-day and full-day trips are both available, with morning and afternoon departures — so you can build it around whatever else you've got planned.
If you're feeling more adventurous, they also run intermediate and Class II–IV whitewater trips on the Middle Fork and South Fork for paddlers looking for a little more pulse.
Self-guided rentals are available too, with shuttle service and all the gear you need included.

One of the most charming stops on the Redwood Coast just updated its schedule for June. 🏠
Battery Point Lighthouse in Crescent City is open for tours this month — a real working lighthouse you can actually walk out to at low tide. The schedule varies by day, so here's what to know before you go:
🗓️ June Tour Hours:

Sundays: Closed (except June 1 — open 10–3, and June 21 — open 10–2)
Mondays: Closed most weeks
Tues–Sat: Generally open mornings through early afternoon, hours vary by day

Best bet is to check the current schedule before heading out — tides affect access and hours can shift. The lighthouse sits on a small island just offshore, reachable on foot when the tide is out. Worth every step.

Taco Tuesday just got a reason to drive to Crescent City. 🌮
Toreros Mexican Restaurant & Lounge is serving up tacos from 5:30–8:30 PM tomorrow night — birria, carne asada, and pork carnitas at $3.50 each, or shrimp, ceviche, and tostada at $4.50. Fresh lime, premium tequila, and a full margarita menu to wash it all down.
Toreros has been a Crescent City staple since 1993, and Taco Tuesday is the reason why. A great excuse to head into town after a day on the trails.

Early evening on the Klamath.
Two bald eagles on the bank downriver, tearing apart a fresh catch. A handful of turkey vultures nearby — patient, watchful — waiting for whatever got left behind.
This is why you slow down. This is why you look. The Klamath River corridor has been feeding eagles — and the people who call this place home — for thousands of years. The Yurok, whose ancestral homeland runs along this river, have always understood that if you pay attention, the natural world will show you something real.
Tonight it showed us the food chain, live and unfiltered.

🦭 Where the Klamath River meets the Pacific, the wildlife show is always on.
The estuary at the mouth of the Klamath is one of those places that rewards anyone who takes the time to stop and look around. Harbor seals haul out on the sand just where the river spills into the ocean — on a good day you'll spot dozens of them sunbathing, jostling for position, and diving into the current to fish. Steller sea lions make seasonal appearances too.
Look up and you've got bald eagles, osprey, and peregrine falcons working the sky year-round. Watch long enough and you'll likely catch an osprey dropping down to sn**ch a fish right out of the water. The river also draws grebes, loons, herons, shorebirds, and waterfowl — serious birders, bring your binoculars.
Below the surface, the Klamath runs deep with chinook and coho salmon, steelhead, coastal cutthroat trout, and even sturgeon. It's been a lifeline for the Yurok people for thousands of years — and one look at this place tells you exactly why.

🦅 Something remarkable is happening right here in Yurok Country.
California condors — called prey-go-neesh in the Yurok language — are flying free in the redwoods just outside your door. The Yurok Tribe's Northern California Condor Restoration Program reintroduced condors to this region in 2022, and 23 now live in the wild within Yurok ancestral territory.
This spring, the program hit a milestone: a free-flying pair nested for the first time in more than 100 years, with a female laying an egg inside the cavity of an old-growth redwood in the Redwood Creek drainage. The first egg appears to have been unsuccessful — not unusual for first-time condor parents — but biologists remain hopeful the pair will try again, and note that success rates climb significantly with each attempt.
With a goal of establishing a self-sustaining flock, the program plans to release at least one new group of birds every summer for at least 20 years. These skies are only going to get more interesting.
Keep your eyes up when you're out on the trails. You just might spot one.
