🦌 There's nothing quite like hearing a bull elk bugle through the redwoods. This time of year, the Roosevelt elk here on the North Coast are in the thick of rutting season — bulls carrying full racks, sparring for dominance, and calling out across the meadows to keep their herds together.
Roosevelt elk are the largest of the elk subspecies, and this stretch of coastline is one of the best places anywhere to spot them. Keep an eye out along the roadside meadows and forest edges as you make your way toward the park — herds tend to graze in open clearings in the early morning and evening hours.
A gentle reminder: these are wild animals, especially worked up this time of year. Enjoy the view from a respectful distance and stay in your vehicle or well back if you pull over to watch.

🌿 Just outside your door: Fern Canyon

There's a reason Fern Canyon is one of the most photographed spots on the Redwood Coast. Sword ferns and five-finger ferns blanket 50-foot canyon walls on both sides, with Home Creek running right through the middle. It's lush, quiet, and feels a little prehistoric (the canyon has appeared in a few films for exactly that reason).

A few things to know before you go:
🥾 The trail involves creek crossings — plan on wet feet or bring water shoes
🌧️ It's rainforest terrain, so it can be muddy and slick even on dry days
📍 Located in Redwood National and State Parks, north along the coast from the park

🌫️ Mornings on the Klamath

There's a particular kind of quiet that settles over the river before sunrise — a thick, silver fog rolling in off the Pacific, softening the tree line and blurring where the water ends and the sky begins. This is the Klamath at its most magical.

As the mist starts to lift, the river reveals itself as the living, breathing place it truly is. Salmon moving beneath the surface. Ospreys and herons working the shallows. Harbor seals and sea lions surfacing near the river mouth, curious and unbothered, hunting the same waters as everyone else. Even the birdsong changes throughout the morning — call after call layering in as the fog thins.

It's one of those experiences that's hard to put into words and even harder to forget. Grab your coffee, walk down to the water, and just watch it wake up.

🏕️ Campground etiquette reminders 🐻

A few friendly ones as we head into the last stretch of the season:

✅ Store food & scented items (coolers, toothpaste, sunscreen) in your vehicle overnight — not the tent or picnic table
✅ Pack out trash right away, don't let it sit
✅ Give neighboring sites their space — gear, awnings, pets included
✅ Keep it quiet after hours 🤫
✅ Follow posted park rules — speed limits, pet leash policy, etc.

Small stuff, but it makes a big difference for everyone's stay — and keeps the bears wild and your gear intact. Thanks for helping us keep Klamath River RV Park a great place to camp. 🌲

🐟 The river has been good to us this year.

🌲 Sunlight through the redwoods along Highway 101

There's a moment on the drive through Redwood National and State Parks when the light breaks through the canopy just right — golden rays filtering down through hundreds of feet of ancient growth, mist still hanging in the air from the morning.

These coastal redwoods are the tallest trees on Earth, and they've been growing along this stretch of coastline for centuries. Driving the 101 through this corridor isn't just a way to get somewhere — it's an experience in itself, with pullouts and short trails that let you step out of the car and stand beneath giants.

🌊 Beneath the waves along the Redwood Coast, kelp forests are quietly doing some of the hardest work in the ocean.

These underwater forests are home to hundreds of species — some estimates put kelp forest biodiversity among the richest of any ecosystem on the planet. They buffer our coastline against storms, filter and clean the water, and store carbon that would otherwise warm our seas.

Seaweed has also long been a traditional food source for the Native American peoples of this region, including the Yurok, Wiyot, Hupa, and Tolowa Dee-ni' — a connection between people and coastline that goes back generations.

Next time you're watching the waves from the beach or the bluffs, take a moment to appreciate what's happening just below the surface. This coast is more alive than it looks. 🌿

It's Salmon Festival weekend! 🐟

This Saturday, August 15, the Yurok Tribe hosts the 62nd Annual Klamath Salmon Festival right here in town at the Yurok Tribal Headquarters, 190 Klamath Blvd — just minutes from the park.

This year's festival carries extra meaning: after a three-year closure of the salmon fishery, traditionally cooked salmon is back on the menu for the first time since 2022, honoring the river's continued recovery.

The free, family-friendly event runs 9 AM–3 PM and includes a parade, live music, cultural demonstrations, and more than 170 local vendors — a great way to spend the day and celebrate the Klamath River that runs right past our door.

Staying with us this weekend? It's an easy walk or short drive into town — come hungry and come early, salmon lunch service tends to draw a crowd.

🌠 Look up — the Perseids are about to put on a show.

The Perseid meteor shower peaks tomorrow night, Wednesday, August 12, into the early hours of Thursday, August 13. This year's timing is about as good as it gets: a new moon falls the same night, so there's no moonlight to wash out the sky — just dark, clear conditions for spotting shooting stars.

Best viewing is midnight to dawn, when rates can climb to 50+ meteors an hour under a truly dark sky. No telescope or binoculars needed — just find an open patch of sky, give your eyes 15-20 minutes to adjust to the dark, and look toward the northeast. The meteors will seem to streak outward from the constellation Perseus, but they can appear anywhere overhead.

Here at the park, you're already away from city lights — grab a blanket or camp chair, bundle up (river nights get cool), and let the sky do the rest. If Wednesday night clouds over, the shower stays active through late August, so there's still time to catch it.
