CJ Bear Beat: Week seven in the Thumb kicked off on a fantastic note! The weather has been absolutely beautiful, and the fish are still showing up in strong numbers. I've had some delightful moments with Cocoa, especially when she dozed off in the sun—her adorable naps definitely add a layer of joy to our days. This season, she's been quite the relaxed bear, often found lounging on the riverbank, keeping a watchful eye for fish instead of actively fishing. Her antics have been a wonderful source of comic relief!
Patches is hanging out with her cubs a lot, and I'm thrilled to share that they are thriving! We were pleasantly surprised when Dutchie visited later in the week. It had been a while since I'd seen her, but she was in great form, fishing diligently. Fingers crossed we'll get to enjoy her company more this season! Harriet popped in for a quick hello but didn't stay long, and I still haven't spotted Lloyd in quite a while, which has me a bit curious.
Olga returned after an 11-day absence, though she arrived a little more subdued, with only two cubs and looking a bit skittish. I'm hopeful she'll bounce back and have a brighter season ahead.
As for the Sockeye salmon runs in the Thumb, they're really gaining momentum! The fish are becoming increasingly abundant, especially as they linger in the mouth waiting for rain. With the bears active and on the move, there's more excitement as we seek out sightings. As we near hyperphagia, the anticipation is building for what promises to be an exhilarating time ahead!

CJ Bear Beat: Week six kicked off with a few weather delays, but soon the sun came out, and the conditions for bear watching turned delightful! While the Sockeye haven't quite made their big return to the Thumb River yet, the abundance of berries has slowed the variety of bears. The first days of the week were truly enchanting, featuring some exhilarating close encounters with Karn and her three adorable cubs, not to mention Patches and her trio as well!

Patches and Coco have been lively in the Thumb area, and even though they seemed a bit more elusive towards the end of the week due to changing weather, we were thrilled to catch glimpses of some familiar bears returning.

It was a treat to see Lloyd visit the Thumb, and Harriet made her appearance there too, along with Hermione! Looking ahead to week seven, I'm optimistic that we'll enjoy better weather and those elusive fish will start arriving. Currently, there are about 150,000 Sockeye in the area, but with a staggering 1.2 million pink salmon entering the main Karluk River this season, there's still hope! Sockeye salmon are hanging just outside the Thumb River, likely waiting for some rain. Although things have slowed down a tad, there are still fantastic opportunities for bear viewing, and I can't wait to see what the week brings!

CJ Bear Beat We've entered week five in the Thumb, and it's an exciting time as berries are bursting onto the scene! While elderberries are plentiful, they're not quite as numerous as last year, but don't let that bring us down! The bears are out and about, foraging happily, and our dear friend Coco continues to make daily appearances in the Thumb, reminding us all of the enchanting wildlife around us. We even caught a glimpse of Hermione hanging out toward the week's end, adding to the thrill!
Harriet had fantastic luck fishing this week, with salmon making their much-anticipated return and quite a few late runners showing up. However, the bears still seem to prefer berries to fish. We've enjoyed some wonderful encounters with the bears and their adorable cubs—what a delight!
The weather toward the week's end wasn't ideal, causing delays for our clients, but that's nature for you! A few rainy evenings would actually help the river and lake, so we're looking forward to what Mother Nature decides to bring us.
We even spotted some impressive bears during our boat rides earlier in the week, though they remain a bit shy on the lake. All in all, week five was not just productive but filled with wonder, and we can't wait to see what adventures week six has in store for us! The lake could certainly use some water; a few rainy evenings would be nice. We'll have to see what Mother Nature has in store for us.
