In May 2010, we had the unforgettable pleasure of welcoming Diane Keaton to The Plant. She visited with genuine curiosity, a deep love for architecture, and an unmistakable grace. Sharing time with her—alongside Carrie Bills and Dana—was a real joy. Diane’s passion for distinctive design was clear, and she later honored us by including The Plant and Lake|Flato in her 2012 book entitled “House”, a survey of unconventional and inspiring homes published by Rizzoli.

We’re grateful for her visit and her kind spotlight on a place so special to us. May she rest in peace.

A Lost Gravestone, a Flood, and a 150-Mile Mystery 🪦

Yesterday, our co-hosts and neighbors Martha and Jamie Kinscherff made a quiet, meaningful pilgrimage to Indianola Cemetery — and found a familiar stone now home again: the gravestone of Margaret Clement (1846–1883), once swept into York Creek at The Plant at Kyle.

Owners Mark Holzbach and Dana Friis-Hansen first learned of the stone when they purchased the property in 2007. But it wasn’t until a 2019 flood, when Martha found it lodged in creek debris, that its story began to unfold.

Thanks to sleuthing and stewardship by the Hays County Historical Commission’s J. Marie Bassett and Marjo Landon, and the memory of Marshall Kuykendall (whose family once owned the 101 Ranch where TPAK now stands), we learned the stone likely journeyed inland with descendants or friends after a hurricane devastated Indianola in the 19th century.

With help from Robert Loffin of the Calhoun County Historical Commission, the gravestone was returned to Indianola, where it now stands rejoined with its base — near the waters of Matagorda Bay.

Sometimes history moves in straight lines. Sometimes, in floods.

BRAVO! Congrats to David, Ted, and the whole wonderful team at Lake|Flato Architects for their continued honors from the The American Institute of Architects. Your early innovations in adaptive re-use, architecture sensitive to site and the natural environment, and working with local materials were essential to the powerful experience (and early national recognition) for the Carraro House/Alamo Cement Plant House (1990), now known as The Plant at Kyle. As stewards of this architectural landmark, recently recognized by Iconic Houses, we are pleased to share the complex for event- and vacation rentals and private tours by appointment.
