👻 DARK TRAILS, OLD TALES… THE MORNING JELLICO EXPLODED
Just before 8:00 in the morning on September 21, 1906, Jellico changed in a matter of seconds.
A railroad car loaded with dynamite exploded in the rail yard.
The blast tore through the business district. Buildings closest to the rail yard were destroyed, windows shattered across town, and the damage stretched far beyond the center of Jellico.
People were killed. Many more were injured. Families were left picking through what remained.
Even the exact death toll became difficult to settle, with newspapers reporting different numbers as rescuers searched through the wreckage.
In the aftermath, Jellico’s mayor imposed a curfew and additional men were deputized to help keep order while the town began recovering.
Today, you can drive through Jellico without hearing that morning.
But the town that grew afterward was shaped by it.
No ghost story. No legend needed.
For one morning in 1906, the real history was frightening enough.
