Wagon Wheel Cabins are TERRIFIC…and they’ve got July and August vacancies. Thank you for supporting Lake City businesses at this stressful time 😅

Soccer camp at Memorial Park today. Kids playing, families gathering, mountains standing tall in the background, and our community doing what it does best, living life and supporting one another.

We know many people have questions about the fire situation, and we’re grateful for all the calls, messages, prayers, and support.

While there may be smoke at times, Lake City is open, our businesses are open, and our community remains strong.

Today was a good reminder of why we love this town so much. It’s not just the scenery, it’s the people, the resilience, and the sense of community that make Lake City such a special place.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support our town, our local businesses, and the families who call Lake City home. ❤️

Another Fire Season in The Mountain West

Wildfire season is a real threat, but it’s also a seasonal risk—not an emergency that demands constant panic. Overreacting can be fueled by media coverage: Don't be susceptible to online reels and TV reporters in big cities who know little to nothing about forest ecosystems in the Mountain West.

The truth is that serotinous forests follow predictable patterns. June-July is a high probability wildfire month because summer monsoon rains are hit or miss (less than a third of June afternoons are rainy in Lake City and only about half are in July through August). Once the afternoon rains start up in July the fire risk is considerably diminished, even in a drought year. Winds also decrease from July through October further reducing risk.

Current Situation

As of 6/30 at 1:00 p.m. there is an 8300-acre wildfire northeast of the town of Ouray, over the continental divide due west of Lake City about 30 miles. The winds are out of the southwest so smoke is not visible in Lake City (see pic below, snapped at 11:40 a.m.). There's also no chance of that fire jumping over the continental divide because those 13,000-14,000-foot mountains are treeless and very rocky (timberline in this part of Colorado is about 11,000-11,500 feet). There are no road closures affecting Lake City visitors and the fire is also not affecting travel on the Alpine Loop.

Smoke in Lake City?

It's not smoky now, but could become so if the wind shifts out of the west or northwest. For reference, fires in Utah are producing smoke that is currently affecting visibility in Denver and Colorado Springs, 300+ miles away. Seeing or smelling smoke does not mean a fire is close by.

The Real Risk

What you should take very seriously and is not overblown is the Stage 2 burn ban now in effect for Hinsdale County. Campfires, charcoal grills, fireworks, outdoor smoking....DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. If a fire started in our valley then emergency actions WOULD be imminent.

More Information

Wildfires are complex and ever-changing, and sometimes wildly unpredictable. High winds can produce massive changes in a short period of time, just as big downpours can. We recommend you download Watch Duty on your smartphone so you can be informed in real time about wildfires and their proximity when you come to the Mountain West.

Bottom Line

Fire season is a seasonal hazard, not an all-or-nothing threat. By understanding the science you can reduce anxiety and be prepared when conditions demand action. This balanced approach helps you stay safe without letting media-driven fear dominate your daily life.

THE SECRET SEASON

The weather has been gorgeous and the fishing superb so far this spring on the Lake Fork river. Water is relatively warm for May and the bugs and trout are very active. I quickly found fish (even the larger ones) holding and feeding up in the medium to shallow riffles. Indicator nymphing was the ticket on 4x/5x tippet casting upstream. On 5/6 Tuesday a tungsten Blowtorch ( #14-16) on the bottom and above it about 12-16” a #10 brown Pat’s or Twenty-incher consistently produced. I got ten in the net in three hours of leisurely wading. Be sure and vary your indicator depth as you encounter the occasional deeper pool, but I caught most of my fish in the riffles. Sunlight or shade did not seem to matter…these fish are hungry and eager. Wading is also super easy at these low (~150cfs) flows. Not sure how much longer these great early season conditions will last—perhaps a two weeks, but could be shorter.

Lake San Cristobal has been ice free for over a month and May is typically the best month to fish it. Last weekend there were fish rising by the hundreds at dusk and not a single angler or boat in sight.

I’ve never understood why more people don’t come to Lake City in May, especially this year since snowpack is very low and many trails are open, fishing great, and there are NO CROWDS anywhere you go. It truly is the quiet, secret season. On my afternoon of fishing Monday I saw exactly one other car parked along the 20+ miles of Lake Fork river public access. Get here! DD
