As families and friends prepare to gather to celebrate Independence Day, I want to wish everyone a happy, safe, and memorable Fourth of July. All across Warren County, residents and visitors will enjoy concerts, fireworks, picnics, and other traditions that remind us of the freedoms we are so privileged to enjoy.

This year’s celebrations will be especially meaningful as our nation continues the commemoration of America’s Semiquincentennial, the 250th Anniversary of our country’s founding. I encourage everyone to participate in the many local events that make our County such a wonderful place to live and visit. While we celebrate, safety should remain a high priority. If you plan to attend holiday events, please drive responsibly, never operate a vehicle or a watercraft while impaired, wear your seatbelt, and be patient as traffic increases around celebrations. The Warren County Sheriff’s Office will have additional officers patrolling throughout the holiday weekend to help ensure we all can celebrate safely.

There are many family friendly events, concerts, and fireworks displays that have been scheduled starting Thursday July 2nd through Independence Day Saturday. Many will likely gather to enjoy America’s 250th Anniversary fireworks display over the beautiful waters of Lake George on Saturday July 4th at 9:30 p.m. This free event is sure to draw thousands of spectators to Lake George Village. I have prepared a plan and a traffic flow guide that I hope will assist vehicle and pedestrian traffic following the show.

Please refer to the guide and notes below for details.

🔹Officers will begin monitoring traffic in and around Beach Road in the early afternoon to prevent traffic congestion and enforce illegal parking.

🔹At 9:00 p.m. officers will restrict entry to certain roadways and begin manually controlling intersections.

🔹At 9:20 p.m. all traffic lights in Lake George Village will be placed in a flashing mode as officers prepare to assist with a safe and timely exit.

On behalf of the men and women of our Sheriff’s Office, I wish you and your family a safe, enjoyable, and meaningful Independence Day. As we celebrate our nation’s past and look toward its future, let us do so with gratitude, pride, and a shared commitment to keeping our communities safe.

Let’s bring back this type of entertainment!!

Today for Throwback Thursday we are going to throw it back to the early 1950s with this shot of a water skier hitting a jump near Shepard Park. In the background you can see the old wooden pier at the steamboat company and train station.

Water skiing was invented in 1922 when 18 year-old Ralph Samuelson used a pair of boards as skis and a clothesline as a towrope on Lake Pepin in Lake City, Minnesota, and the sport grew quickly!
The first wooden ski jump was built in 1928 and by the 1930s the first water skiing competitions were held!
In 1972, water skiing was even featured as a demonstration sport at the Olympic Games!

The Adirondacks saw a boom in recreational water skiing in the 1940s and was a popular recreation of folks for the next few decades, much to the dismay of some locals who didnt like the fast boats going all over the calm waters of the lakes and ponds.

Since these days, water skiing popularity in America has declined significantly, with participation dropping from 6 million in 2007 to 3 million in 2022. This decline is driven by high costs for specialized boats, intense competition from easier-to-learn tow sports like wake surfing, and a shift from public to private access making a lot of smaller ponds and lakes inaccessible.
But here in the Adirondacks there still are a few folks who head out on the calm waters to take part in this 100+ year old pastime!
