The fourth season of the Lake View Speaker Series begins Saturday, October 31st at 1:00 p.m. with Dr. David Gallo of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. After his presentation, Dr. Gallo will sign photos of the Titanic.
After receiving his bachelor’s and master’s in geology at SUNY-Albany, Dr. David Gallo went on to receive his doctorate in marine biology at the University of Rhode Island. In 1987, he was offered a position as assistant to Dr. Robert Ballard at Woods Hole, who led an international team that discovered the location of the Titanic off Newfoundland in 1985. Later, he was appointed director of one of six sections at Woods Hole, that of Special Projects, a position he held for 30 years. He's worked with the development of robotics and submersibles, doing pioneering exploration of the deepest regions which remain still largely unexplored. Other archeological work, in addition to Titanic ground mapping, includes the Atlantic's battleship Bismarck's site from the Second World War, and the ill-fated Air France 447 flight in 2009. He's explored all the world's oceans, including the Shackleton site in the Antarctic, the Indian Ocean, and Atlantis research in the Mediterranean. It was soon recognized that he's an excellent communicator, and he became a 'go-to person' for the media whenever a news story or discovery in the ocean was made. Filmmakers select him as an interviewee for documentaries, and he's appeared on the NatGeo Channel, Discovery, History Channel, and PBS. He's done several TED talks, one being one of the most highly-viewed episodes, 'Underwater Astonishments,' which has been seen by more than 16,000,000 people, and he's classified as a 'TED All-Star'. He's spoken internationally to a variety of audiences and has been recognized by the Smithsonian and the Lotus Club; he has received the Explorers Club Lowell Thomas Medal, of which he's a national fellow, and he's a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
The fourth season will then continue on January 2nd with business executive and philanthropist Merrill Eisenhower. His business interests cover a wide range of industries, and as a grandson of President Dwight Eisenhower, he's developed a lifelong commitment to community and public service. On April 10th, the season concludes with author Dr. Anthony Paustian, whose 'A Quarter Million Steps' draws inspiration from the epic story of the Apollo Program as a guide in goal-setting in our everyday life and careers.
All three talks will be held at the Lake View Community Center, and all are encouraged to attend, as these events are free and open to the public.
