The largest natural lake in Arkansas is also the largest oxbow lake in North America, and the water sitting in that Chicot County crescent was once the main channel of the Mississippi River before the river decided to take a different route and left its old bend behind. 💧 Lake Chicot is one of the most geologically extraordinary bodies of water in the American interior, and the land around it has been continuously inhabited for longer than almost anywhere else in the lower Mississippi valley.
The documented geological record of Lake Chicot traces its formation to a Mississippi River cutoff event that left the old river meander isolated as a crescent-shaped lake stretching eighteen miles through Chicot County. The documented archaeological record of the Lake Chicot area places continuous human habitation at the site going back thousands of years, with Native American mound sites and artifact scatters documented by the Arkansas Archaeological Survey as among the most significant in the lower Mississippi valley. The lake's documented biological significance includes one of the most productive sport fisheries in the mid-South, its warm shallow waters and abundant aquatic vegetation supporting fish populations that have sustained communities along its banks for millennia. 📋
