Have you ever seen an Annular Eclipse? This may be your chance!

πŸ“… On October 14, 2023 parts of Arches and Canyonlands National Parks will experience one of the great astronomical events of local history: an Annular Solar Eclipse. This eclipse will obscure a portion of the sun for nearly three hours in the morning of that special Saturday. While Arches sits outside the path of total annularity, visitors in the park will still get to experience a 90% eclipse of the sun!

Visitors wishing to experience the eclipse at Arches will need to obtain a Timed Entry Ticket if arriving after 7 am or before 4 pm. For more information about Arches Timed Entry and to get your Arches Ticket, visit our website.

If you plan to view the eclipse in Arches, come prepared, the park will be busy! Here are some tips for a successful visit:

🚌 Pack your patience. Expect heavy congestion, long lines, and limited parking.

🚰 Plan ahead. Be prepared with water, food, and vehicle fuel for the day.

β›” No roadside parking. Follow all traffic and informational signs.

πŸš‘ Be aware of your surroundings. Vehicles blocking traffic flow or access for emergency vehicles will be towed and ticketed.

β›Ί Camp only in designated campgrounds. Overnight parking or camping in roadside pullouts, turnouts, or parking lots is not allowed.

⏰ Plan to find your spot at least an hour before the eclipse begins.

Aspens Changing Color Above the Dunes, October 2023

Higher elevation aspen trees in Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve are near peak color now, with lower elevation aspens and cottonwoods expected to peak in the next 10 days.

Image description: Groves of aspen trees are a golden yellow color above the dunes, which are illuminated by late afternoon sun with cloud shadows. Snow has dusted the alpine tundra, and the sky above is a mix of clouds and blue sky.

Sun, sun, sun, here it comes! It's alright, you have sunscreen, right? Doo-doo-doo-doo find the shade and be prepared! Heat illness can cause symptoms from heat rash to heat stroke. You may need at least a full day of rest to recover or a visit to the hospital. This could ruin your whole trip.

Practice these cool tips on your next hike to reduce your risk of heat illness:

β€’ Hike before 10AM or after 4PM, the coolest times of the day
β€’ Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun
β€’ Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated
β€’ Eat salty snacks to replace electrolytes lost when sweating
β€’ Rest often in shade to cool down
β€’ Turn around if it is too hot
β€’ Call 911 if you experience heat illness
