Just south of Tallahassee, the ground opens into one of the deepest and most mysterious freshwater springs on the entire planet, pouring out hundreds of millions of gallons of crystal clear water every single day. 💧

Wakulla Springs has drawn people for thousands of years, and the water is so clear that divers have mapped a vast flooded cave system reaching far back under the earth, still not fully explored. From the spring's depths, workers have pulled the bones of mastodons and other Ice Age giants that once drank here, along with ancient human artifacts. It is a place where deep time feels very close to the surface.

In the twentieth century the springs became a beloved old Florida attraction, complete with glass bottom boats and a grand 1930s lodge that still welcomes guests. Its jungle like shores were so wild and lush that early Tarzan movies and the classic Creature from the Black Lagoon were filmed here. Today it is a protected state park where manatees drift, alligators sun themselves, and swimmers still leap from the same high platform their grandparents did. 🐊

Scallop season is in full swing on Florida’s Big Bend, and the Econfina-area season closes September 24th! Spend the morning floating over the shallow grass flats of Apalachee Bay, spotting bay scallops beneath the surface, and collecting them by hand with your family and friends. It’s part snorkeling adventure, part summertime treasure hunt, and one of those rare outdoor experiences everyone can enjoy together.
Then come back and enjoy the Sporting Club life—lunch and a signature cocktail by the pool, time to relax at the lodge, and, for overnight guests, the chance to have your fresh scallops prepared by our chef.
