Wednesday Nor'easter Threat : Preliminary Forecast
The data has been divided on the details today, and so with about 36 hours until to the event, we still have a lot of details to work through. So here is our preliminary forecast for the event:
Timeline:
- A mixture of rain and wet snow begins between 7 and 11am on Wednesday in the valley, from south to north, before changing to mainly snow quickly. Higher elevations should start out as all snow.
- Snow falls moderate to heavy at times from 12pm to 9pm. Snowfall rates during this time could range from 1 to 2 inches per hour.
- Snowfall begins to taper off between 9pm and 2am from west to east.
Accumulations: (Refer to Micro-climate Map)
- Zone 1: 3 to 6 inches of snow
- Zones 2,3&4 (north of dashed line): 5 to 8 inches (locally higher amounts especially in zone 4)
- Zones 2,3&4 (south of dashed line): 6 to 12 inches (locally higher amounts in SE Catskills, Gunks & Taconics)
- Zones 5,6&7: 6 to 12 inches (locally higher amounts in SE Catskills, Gunks & Taconics)
- Zone 8: 5 to 8 inches (locally higher in the NW hills) some mixing possible.
- Zone 9: 2 to 6 inches, a fair amount of mixing likely
Please keep in mind, that the snow will begin to band, and that will lead to locally heavy snowfall rates, that could get as high as 3" per hour for a brief time. Also, this will be a heavy wet snow... so isolated power outages will be possible where there are still a good amount of leaves on trees. The road conditions may start out wet, but with snowfall rates that we're expecting, despite the warm weather of late... roads will very likely be snow covered and treacherous.
We apologize for the delay with the update due to technical issues... we are moving the website to a new server to avoid future issues. We will have more updates in the next 24 to 36 hours as the storm continues to develop, and more information becomes available.
