The Castaneda is an historic Fred Harvey Hotel located in beautiful Las Vegas, New Mexico, along Amtrak's Southwest Chief line. The hotel opened in 1898 - the first Harvey Hotel in the Southwest. Teddy Roosevelt came with the first Rough Riders reunion in 1899, and the Castaneda became famous for New Mexico hospitality. It closed in 1948 and was derelict for more than fifty years until purchased by Allan Affeldt of La Posada Hotel in 2014 for a multi-year, multi$ million restoration. Now the Castaneda has been completely restored, with a fabulous restaurant and full of beautiful antiques. The project has received national awards and recognitions, from CBS Sunday Morning to the state historic preservation office. Las Vegas is steeped in history and we are grateful to those keeping it alive!

Tom Clayton shared this picture of the Rawlin's Building and the Castaneda Hotel. It's a scene of the two buildings that were getting close to their end of life. Beautiful restoration of both of them.

The historic Castañeda Hotel in Las Vegas, NM, was named after Pedro de Castañeda de Nájera, a Spanish foot soldier who served in the 1540s expedition led by explorer Francisco Vázquez de Coronado. He is best known for writing the primary historical account of that journey. Castañeda was born in Nájera, Spain, and traveled through the Southwest documenting the landscapes, the indigenous people, and the events of the Coronado expedition. When the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway built the Mission Revival-style hotel in 1898, railway president Edward Ripley chose the name to honor this early chronicler of New Mexico history.
