The Dragon is about to light up the night sky. ππ
Tonight, October 8, the annual Draconid meteor shower reaches its 2026 peak β and this is one meteor shower youβll want to watch soon after darkness falls.
Unlike many major meteor showers, the Draconids are best seen in the evening because their radiant in the constellation Draco is highest in the sky around sunset.
The meteors come from tiny fragments left behind by Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner. As Earth moves through this debris stream, some particles plunge into our atmosphere and burn up as streaks of light.
Most years, the Draconids are a quiet shower, producing only a handful of meteors per hour. But this shower has a reputation for occasional surprises β rare outbursts have produced dramatically higher rates. π
And the timing is excellent in 2026: a thin waning crescent Moon should cause little interference, with New Moon arriving October 10.
π
Peak: October 8β9
π Best time: Evening, after dark
π§ Look toward the northern sky
π No telescope needed
π Minimal moonlight
Find somewhere dark, let your eyes adjust, and give the sky a little time.
Because you never know when the Dragon might wake up. πβ¨
Would you stay outside tonight to catch a Draconid?
