US 2 Tumwater Canyon reopened to two-way traffic
Highway has been closed since dramatic damage from December storms; additional work on permanent repairs to come this summer
LEAVENWORTH – As of 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 10, US 2 Tumwater Canyon (mileposts 90-99) near Leavenworth has reopened to normal, two-way traffic, more than a month ahead of schedule. This fully restores cross-state access on US 2 between Skykomish and Leavenworth. Additional work will be needed this summer to complete permanent repairs along US 2 including Tumwater Canyon and Stevens Pass, which may require closures.

In the aftermath of December’s historic flooding, the Washington State Department of Transportation has been working around the clock to reopen more than 90 roads across the state. The damage to US 2 was extensive, with multiple closures.

The Tumwater Canyon section has been closed since mid-December due to severe washouts.

Reopening this stretch means that US 2 between Skykomish and Leavenworth is fully reconnected, and all sections of US 2 that closed due to flooding and washouts have now reopened to traffic.

Emergency repairs to US 2 Stevens Pass are complete, and it is OPEN with NO pilot car to Coles Corner (MP 85)! While this is great news, a few things to remember:

-US 2 Tumwater Canyon remains closed, with Chumstick Highway as a detour. Chumstick Highway is a county road with lower speeds and bridge restrictions. It’s already starting to show signs of wear and tear, and we’ll be doing repairs on it next week. With this in mind, please avoid using US 2 for cross-state travel. Alternatives like I-90, US 97 Blewett Pass and SR 28 through Quincy remain better options right now.

- While US 2 Stevens Pass is open to normal traffic flow, this is a mountain pass and it’s winter. Conditions can change quickly. Check conditions before you head out, and be prepared: https://wsdot.com/travel/real-time/mountainpasses/

So grateful to all the hard working line crews, firefighters and first responders….lets not forget the 911 dispatchers, and everyone working hard to get our community back up and running.

Power has returned to portions of the Leavenworth area including the downtown core. We appreciate your patience with local businesses as they reopen, restaurants may be slower to open due to food loss, and we ask that everyone be mindful of the many crews working in and around Leavenworth on post-storm cleanup. Park lights will remain off this weekend while remaining power issues are addressed, and repairs are being planned by our lighting crews so the park lights can be enjoyed once again next week.
