Join us TODAY at 10:00 am at CAMREC or pop by when you can! In collaboration with Cascadia Prescribed Burn Association we are hosting a second free and hands-on learning opportunity to assist on a prescribed burn! Thanks to our volunteers, board members, the PBA, and Ecological Services LLC, we had a great prescribed burn on Tuesday. The fire was so effective and the conditions cooperated so well that we added another burn today!

Don't forget! Folks of all ages and experience levels are invited to register and join the 8 acre prescribed burn tomorrow, Oct 6 at Camp CAMREC in collaboration with the Cascadia Prescribed Burn Association. Please register here: https://luma.com/mekwpng5

Our staff along with the crew from Ecological Services has been hard at work prepping the site and planning the burn. This burn is another step in our forest management plan following decades of thinning and brush control. This will help promote more diversity in the unit of grasses, forbs and provide a fuel reduction near critical infrastructure on the property. It is one more contribution to reducing wildfire risk in our region.

We look forward to seeing many CAMREC friends at the 49th annual Mennonite Country Auction tomorrow in Ritzville supporting the world-wide relief efforts of Mennonite Central Committee! If you have never attended before, CAMREC staff would be glad to show you the ropes. We will have a camp table with updates on our programs, land stewardship, and community.

MCC, a worldwide ministry of Anabaptist churches, shares God’s love and compassion for all in the name of Christ by responding to basic human needs and working for peace and justice. MCC envisions communities worldwide in right relationship with God, one another and creation.

Have some extra time on your hands this weekend? Want an excuse to get outside and enjoy the fall weather next week?

Come help us plant our new native pollinator habitat kits at CAMREC! We’ll be planting this weekend and into next week, and we’d love some extra hands. Send us a message and let us know when you’re available! 🌱

Thanks to Cascadia Conservation District and the , we received about 100 native herbaceous & woody plants in 3 garden kits and another 45 plants in 1 hedgerow kit 🐝🦋🌿

These plants will help us create more habitat for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators while continuing to care for and restore the land around CAMREC. They will also help us beautify our entrance and reduce erosion around several buildings.

August in Review:

On August 1, CAMREC was celebrating the end of our unique, short weekend of all-ages summer camp, which brought together 74 participants full of energy to explore the theme Seeking Justice Together through games, adventures, music, and Biblical reflection.

A few days later, wildfires in the area—especially the Little Giant Fire—blanketed our region in hazardous smoke. Those conditions have persisted nearly every day since, as the fire has grown to over 170,000 acres while remaining about 15 miles north of camp.

Throughout August, camp has been empty and quiet, with rental groups and outdoor activities canceled as our Air Quality Index has frequently reached well into the 1,000s. Camp staff and their families have spent much of the month indoors with air purifiers, with a few stints staying off-site.

Even while camp has been quiet, staff, volunteers, and board members have been busy planning for the fall—from forest stewardship activities to retreats and guest rentals. Some of that work is reflected in our August issue of The Chumstick, CAMREC’s newsletter, linked in the comments below.

As we start to see bluer skies, we invite you to re-live the joy of summer camp through this photo album and consider how you might continue “connecting our communities, Creation, and our Creator” through CAMREC—by joining us for future events, helping offset the revenue lost during this fire season, or keeping our region in your prayers as fires continue.
