When Millard Weaver built what is now the main lodge of The Secret Bed and Breakfast in 1965 it was considered extravagant for its time. Built on solid bedrock, the tile for the floor was imported from Italy. The wood beams in the ceiling are 2′ x 8′ double tongue and groove pine that was imported from British Honduras. The beam that runs the length of the house is actually metal but was painted to look like wood by and artist that Mr. Weaver hired. The entire home is concrete and steel that was meant to stand the test of time! Fifty years later, what was once built for entertainment now serves as a quiet retreat from the outside world. The built in intercom system has long since quit working, and we all know how useful the 42 phone jacks are today!
With Autumn fast on the heals of summer, make plans to visit our mountain “Secret”. The house itself is not the only spectacular sight on the property. The view off the bluff colored in reds and golds is an amazing sight that should not only be seen but experienced!

The Beauty Berry Bushes are beginning to turn a gorgeous purple! They grow all around our property, especially in the pasture. I think that the goats and chickens eating them has spread their seeds everywhere. The berries can be made into jelly and the leaves have properties that ward off mosquitoes and ticks. When the berries begin to turn you know that fall is on the way!

I set my alarm. My plan was to get up at 11:00 to see the Lunar Eclipse. When it went off I turned it off and went back to sleep. I missed the eclipse, but before I went to bed I got a good photo of the full moon. This morning I was greeted by a beautiful pink sunrise. During the summer months I miss the sunrise because it rises to far behind the trees. As winter approaches the sun moves across the sky in line with the lake in the distance. The best sunrises are in December and January when the view from the rooms upstairs can be seen from your bed!

Tonight at 11:15 is the Lunar Eclipse. How fitting that it is happening just days after the world lost one of its cherished philanthropist, Dolly Parton. The moon will go dark in her honor. Like many out there I was a big fan, not only of her music but of her person. If more were "like Dolly" and cared about the rest of the world more than themselves what a wonderful world it would be. Perhaps this is a wake-up call to all those politicians and people out there fighting among themselves to just stop. Stop and for once put others first.

It's National Park Week!!! The week long celebration of our Nation's National Parks actually started on August 22nd and goes through August 30th. Here in North Alabama we have our own National Park, Little River Canyon. Today in honor of the National Park Service 110th birthday as well as to celebrate the week, all National Parks that charge a fee are having a "fee free day".
Officially created in 1992, Little River Canyon Preserve protects what is considered to be the nation’s longest mountaintop river. Most of its entire length flows down the middle of Lookout Mountain beginning with headwaters in Georgia and emptying into the Coosa River and Weiss Lake. Over time the waters of the river have carved out one of the Southeasts deepest canyons and is said to have the cleanest and wildest waterways in the South. The canyon walls with its shear rock cliffs are more visible in the winter time with the dying down of vegetation. Eberhart Point along the Scenic Drive is the most convenient point to descend onto the canyon floor. This hike, however, is not for the faint of heart as it has a steep incline back up to the top! Remnants of what use to be an amusement park, including abandoned picnic shelters are still visible on its floor. If you can physically make the hike down the views are spectacular. And don’t forget on your way out to stop and take in all the other overlooks as well as take in the movie at the Canyon Center. Used as a research facility for Jacksonville State University, it is a must see for anyone interested in the natural history of the area.

With August heat heading to 100, everyone seeks out cool spots. Here in North Alabama, we have a couple of wineries that fit that option. Wills Creek Winery is a scenic 20-minute drive from us here at The Secret. Sit under their shade tree and enjoy a glass of wine while enjoying the mountains and lake in the background. Once you're done there, you can head to Jules J Berta Winery in Albertville. Their wood-fired pizza and smash burgers are amazing, as are their wines and slushies. Their new tasting room has plenty of cool spots to sit and enjoy whatever you choose! So, if you're looking for a cool getaway, give us a call! We have a rooftop pool that's calling your name and are close to either winery!

Chickens and Vultures. We have a number of vultures that fly around off the bluff as well as cave off the far side of the property that they nest in. I did not know that there are actually two kinds of vultures: Turkey Vultures and Black Vultures. The type that live here are black vultures. I also did not know that these vultures will prey upon small, sick or vulnerable livestock. We have had chickens for years but never worried about the vultures, only the hawks and occasional eagle. I thought the roosters were dumb for rounding up the hens when the vultures flew over but apparently they are smarter than I give them credit for! The other day two vultures landed in a tree just outside the big gate. We heard the commotion and headed out the investigate. The roosters had already got the hens into the safety of the barn. Even the babies in the paddock without the roosters had sheltered beneath the water trough. Vultures can't swoop down and pick up a chicken, but they can harm them from the ground unless you have a rooster that will challenge them. So, I guess having three roosters has its advantages!
