Weiss Lake in Cherokee County in the northeastern corner of Alabama is a 30,200-acre reservoir on the Coosa River, created by a dam completed in 1961, and it has been called the Crappie Capital of the World for long enough that the nickname has become part of the lake's identity. The crappie fishing at Weiss Lake is genuinely exceptional by any standard, drawing anglers from across the South on a consistent basis and producing fish stories that are passed around fishing communities the way baseball statistics are passed around sports bars.

The lake sits in the foothills of the Appalachian chain in Alabama's northeast corner, surrounded by the kind of landscape that doesn't get much attention in conversations about Alabama's natural assets. It's not the Gulf Coast. It's not the dramatic canyon country of the northwest. It's a different kind of beauty, quieter and more specifically about the relationship between water and wooded hill country and the specific peace that comes from being on a large lake early in the morning when the mist is still on the water and there are no other boats visible.

Cherokee County is about an hour and a half from Atlanta and about the same from Birmingham, and Weiss Lake draws significantly from both directions. The communities around it have been organized around lake life and fishing culture since the lake was created, and the combination of the fishing reputation and the natural setting makes it one of the most genuinely pleasant corners of Alabama to spend a quiet weekend in.

There are two great attractions combined just minutes from your cabin to witness, the ruins of the TAG Railroad ‘Blue Pond’ trestle and Yellow Creek Falls. Both are accessible by boat or jet ski.

The TAG (Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia) railroad trestle was built in 1890, was abandoned in 1971, and dismantled by 2010. It was originally known as the Chattanooga Southern Railroad until 1902.

It transported iron, wood, and coal the first part of its lifetime from Chattanooga to Gadsden. Around 1930, the ‘scooter’ hauled passengers from Chattanooga to Gadsden daily through some of the most breathtaking views.

These views also included Yellow Creek Falls, located adjacent to the Blue Pond trestle. These falls are spectacular and visitable by boat or jet ski.
