Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas!

The Trinity River is at a very odd high flow. TRRP decided to ramp it up to spring rates and it's currently around 4000CFS. I'll post more pix later but this is the put-in across the river from us at Bucktail.

That log came all the way up to the parking lot on the spring flow, but it was parallel to the road down to the put-in. A few days ago, it migrated. Steph's going over to put it back parallel later and I will probably buck it up and bring the wood back with the tractor.

Happy New Year!

Update by Buf!

As you know, I do my best to keep our little family on the right track. I'm good at it, but I can't control everything despite my white paw on Dad's shoulder.

Last month we had The Guys staying at Sow's Ear for their annual Trinity fishing stay. They’re solid folks and we always look forward to their arrival. This year, they brought Dad a handmade fly rod crafted by Dave, who heads up the group. And his wife Dorine made JT a cuddly, delightful scarf that's finding its way into nearly daily use. How sweet is that?

Gary, one of The Guys, had to leave early because his wife took a fall. We didn't even get to say goodbye. Dave told us Gary fell down the stairs a few days ago and died soon after. Everyone is heartbroken. Dave has renamed their group Gary's Guys in his honor.
(Our round profile picture for Trinity River Adventure Cabins features The Guys; Gary is on the right.)

We had two deer incidents the day this picture was taken. On I-5, a deer appeared in our lane and it was headed toward the center divider across three lanes! JT was driving and she dodged to the right but who knows what happened next.

On our way up the mountain in the dark, we were sandwiched between guardrails on both sides of the highway and we had three vehicles behind us. One was about to pass us and suddenly there was a deer in our lane and facing us! All JT could do was a quick swerve to the right but we took out the deer and it took out the truck's left quarter panel.

We were really sad for the deer but glad for that shift to the right. Hitting a deer head-on often results in the animal coming up over the hood and into the windshield. Not good.

So here's a reminder to take care. If you live in deer country, expect the unexpected. Drive slowly (JT does unless we have a reason to rush). And most of all, cherish your friends and the time you have with them.

Love, Buf!❤️

Steph just read a headline that said retirees struggle going from saving to spending.
"They should just take up fly fishing," he said, adding, "Duh."

I was about to say the same thing. He's taught me well.

Yesterday was Beth Huff's car wash, bake sale and raffle to help her kids who lost both parents within a year.

If sheer love, energy and camaraderie could have brought Beth back, it would have happened.

Everyone dove in with all they had and it was sheer joy working alongside such spirits.

Wish I'd gotten shots of the two and even three lanes of vehicles we washed and all of the stunning raffle items and baked goods as the crowds descended but by then I was a little busy.

Great job, y'all.

You know how you tuck into bed and don't like being crowded? Maybe you're not a bat.

These guys are between the glass and the shade screen. They run between none and three daily at Sow's Ear. Guests all get the reminders of bat's' environmental importance and they're cautioned not to tap the glass or bug our buddies.

We seem to attract the right sort of folks because so far, no bad reviews from the bats.

We had the best Memorial Day weekend guests! They fished, ran the river, spent hours on Sow's Ear's porch and hung out with us in the garden.

Kylan, the little guy in front went for tractor lessons in a big way. We did basic maneuvers and operation the first day, and on the second day we went across the river to get rocks. After that, he scooped a bucket of soil for the new raised beds.

And yesterday, after packing up tomato seedlings from the greenhouse, they followed us out of Bucktail with Kylan driving. He's a bright, six-year-old kid who's interested in everything. I created a written tractor test and he aced it. This came as no surprise.

We had great guests over the weekend! They ran the river, fished and hung out on the porch for hours.

The little guy and Heidi made three Baby Blue Alice tractor runs, too. He ran Alice to get rocks and then a bucket load of soil.

Olaf, the yellow lab, had a terrific time playing with our dog, too.
Perfect weather, perfect guests.

We have a thing for rivers

Sow’s Ear is a really comfortable, peaceful and dog-friendly cabin in Bucktail near Lewiston. It’s just up the drive from our cabin and has use of our 600+ feet of Trinity River shoreline and the hot tub that overlooks the river.

We’re close enough that it’s a short stroll to our place to borrow some spice, a fishing net or whatever else didn’t get packed. And we’re far enough away that guests have complete privacy in their own world at the cabin.

Dog people with friendly dogs are delighted to meet our canine queen Buf (pronounced boof). She is a lab/border collie/Aussie/Great Pyrenees mix who loves to play with others! She shows them the best spot for river dips, how much fun it is to run up and down the shoreline chasing sticks or squirrels and generally lazing about. It’s not uncommon for kids from families that don’t have dogs to bond with Buf and spend quiet times on the lawn, talking about the things kids and dogs like.

Guests who return frequently are always impressed to find cool, new changes such as a brand new kitchen with custom, locally made cabinets (2020). And we added a Traeger smoker/BBQ for safe, delicious cooking outside. (Two cabins burned to the ground several blocks away from us late summer. The fire was started by a gas grill that malfunctioned.
