In 1954 the Booker Terrace Motel would open in Miami, Florida to serve the growing need for Black lodging facilities in the city. In 1961 it would be renamed the Hampton House.

The Hampton House catered to a wide variety of African American leaders, athletes, and performers. Sammy Davis Jr., Duke Ellington, Nancy Wilson, Louis Armstrong, LaVern Baker, Malcolm X, and Muhammad Ali all stayed in its warm confines while visiting Miami.

One of the most iconic visits was by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who practiced his "I Have a Dream" speech 3 years before delivering it in Washington DC.
