πŸ”οΈ THE STORY BEHIND THE CHICORY HOUSE

Sometimes life changes your plans overnight.

In 2022, the Yellowstone flood took out my entire booked season in less than 24 hours.

One minute, my calendar was full.
The next, everything changed.

That experience taught me something I’ll never forget:

The Chicory House Bed and Breakfast is more than a calendar full of reservations. It’s something I’ve built with heart, resilience, and a whole lot of determination. ❀️

🌿 I kept going.
🏑 I kept welcoming guests.
πŸ’» I learned new ways to grow my business.
πŸ’› And I became even more determined to create a place where people could slow down, breathe, and experience this beautiful corner of Montana.

Today, every time I fluff a pillow, prepare a room, or welcome someone through our doors, I’m reminded of just how much this little B&B really means to me.

And when you stay here, you become part of that story.

πŸ‚ SEPTEMBER IS ALMOST HERE IN MONTANA! πŸ¦ŒπŸ”οΈ

There’s something special happening in the air here at
The Chicory House Bed and Breakfast!

We’re only a few days away from September 1st, and Montana is beginning to feel that beautiful shift toward fall.

The nights are getting cooler. The days are becoming more comfortable. The smoke has pretty much cleared out ~ although in Montana, we know it can always sneak back in from time to time!

For now, we’re enjoying clear skies, fresh mountain air, and those beautiful panoramic views that make us stop and appreciate where we get to call home.

And Yellowstone is getting ready for one of our favorite shows of the year… the elk rut. 🦌

We still have a few rooms available for September, and
The Chicory House makes a wonderful base camp for your Yellowstone adventures.

Spend your day exploring the park, head down to Mammoth Hot Springs to experience the elk rut, and then come back to a peaceful place where you can relax in the nearby Hot Springs, recharge, and get ready to do it all again tomorrow.

EXPLORE MORE THURSDAYS

πŸ₯Ύ Pine Creek Falls Trail: Step-by-Step Hike Guide

This is a great hike for guests who want a real Montana waterfall experience without committing to an all-day mountain hike.
The first section to Pine Creek Falls is the easier portion of the much longer Pine Creek Lake Trail.

πŸ“ 1. Start at the Pine Creek Trailhead

Park at the Pine Creek Trailhead near Pine Creek Campground, south of Livingston. This is a popular local hike, so arriving earlier in the day is smart, especially in summer. The Forest Service describes Pine Creek as one of the most popular trails in the Absarokas.

πŸ₯Ύ 2. Follow Pine Creek Trail

The trail begins through a beautiful forested mountain setting, gradually climbing alongside Pine Creek.

🌲 Expect:

Shaded forest
Mountain creek views
Tree roots and rocks
Uneven natural trail surface
Gradual uphill sections
Bridges and creek scenery

The first mile is considerably gentler than the trail beyond the falls.

↔️ 3. Watch for the George Lake Trail Junction

About ΒΌ mile into your hike, you'll reach a junction with the George Lake Tie Trail.

πŸ‘‰ Stay on the Pine Creek Trail toward Pine Creek Falls.

The Forest Service confirms this junction occurs shortly after leaving the trailhead.

πŸ’¦ 4. Continue Toward the Falls

As you get closer, the trail becomes a little rockier and narrower, with some additional climbing, but the route to the falls is still generally considered manageable for recreational hikers.

Trail measurements vary slightly depending on the mapping source and turnaround point. A good expectation for visitors is roughly:

πŸ₯Ύ Distance: about 2 to 2.5 miles round trip
⬆️ Elevation gain: roughly 390 to 460 feet on commonly reported routes
⏱️ Allow: about 1 to 1½ hours, longer if you're taking photos or relaxing at the falls
πŸ”„ Trail type: Out and back

Local hiking sources report about 390 to 460 feet of elevation gain, while GPS-mapped routes can vary depending on exactly where the route is recorded.

🌊 5. Arrive at Pine Creek Falls

You'll reach the falls at approximately one mile or a little more from the trailhead, depending on the route measurement used.

There is a sturdy bridge near the waterfall area, making this an especially beautiful place to stop.

πŸ“Έ Take your time here. This is your reward.

Enjoy:

πŸ’¦ Cascading Pine Creek Falls
🌲 Forest views
πŸ“· Waterfall photos
πŸͺ¨ Rocky creek scenery
πŸ₯ͺ A snack or picnic
🌿 Cool mountain air
⚠️ 6. Know Where to TURN AROUND

This is important.

If your destination is Pine Creek Falls, turn around at the falls.

The trail continues toward Pine Creek Lake, but that is an entirely different hike. Beyond the falls, the trail becomes dramatically steeper, gaining roughly 3,000 additional feet over the next four miles, with long climbs and numerous switchbacks.

So don't accidentally think:

β€œThe trail keeps going, let's just see what's up there.”

πŸ˜‚ That innocent little decision can turn your relaxing waterfall walk into a serious mountain hike.

🐻 7. This IS Bear Country

Carry bear spray where you can reach it, not buried in your backpack.

🐻 Make noise on the trail
πŸ‘€ Stay alert
πŸ₯ͺ Keep food secured
🚫 Never approach wildlife
πŸ• Keep dogs under control and follow posted regulations

This trail enters National Forest and mountain habitat where wildlife encounters are always possible.

πŸ‘Ÿ 8. What I Recommend Wearing

You don't need technical hiking gear for the falls, but I would still recommend:

πŸ‘Ÿ Hiking shoes or sturdy athletic shoes
🧦 Good socks
πŸŽ’ Small daypack
πŸ’§ Water
πŸ₯¨ Snack
🧴 Sunscreen
πŸ•ΆοΈ Sunglasses
πŸ§₯ Light layer or rain jacket
🐻 Bear spray
πŸ“± Download your trail map before leaving

The rocks, roots and creek-side terrain can be slippery, especially after rain.

🌦️ 9. Give Yourself Extra Time

For guests staying with us, I would personally suggest allowing around 2 hours at the trailhead.

That gives you time to:

🚢 Hike without rushing
πŸ“Έ Take photographs
πŸ’¦ Enjoy the falls
πŸ₯ͺ Have a snack
🌲 Sit quietly and enjoy the forest
🚢 Walk comfortably back

This isn't a hike I'd rush through. The whole point is to slow down and enjoy it.

⭐ Sheila's Recommendation

Difficulty: 🟒 Easy to moderate for most active visitors
Terrain: 🌲 Forest trail, dirt, rocks, roots and gradual climbing
Best for: Couples, solo travelers, photographers and visitors wanting a shorter Montana hike
Biggest caution: 🐻 Bear country + slippery rocks near moving water
Best reward: πŸ’¦ A beautiful waterfall without hiking deep into the mountains

And one important correction from the graphic we were working on: I would not print β€œ1.8 miles / 400 feet” as an absolute figure. Current sources measure the route differently, with reputable estimates closer to roughly 2–2.5 miles round trip and about 390–460 feet of gain depending on the mapping method. The Forest Service itself describes the falls as about one mile from the trailhead.

For guests, I would phrase it as β€œApproximately 2–2.5 miles round trip β€’ About 400–460 ft elevation gain.” That keeps your Explore More Thursday information accurate without pretending GPS sources all agree perfectly.

πŸ’° MONEY SAVING MONDAYS

Plan Ahead. Spend Smarter. Experience More. 🦬🌲

A Yellowstone vacation doesn’t have to break the bank. I checked these tips against the current 2026 National Park Service information so you can plan with confidence.

🎟️ CHOOSE THE RIGHT PARK PASS
β€’ A 7-day private vehicle pass is $35.
β€’ Yellowstone’s annual pass is $70 for eligible U.S. residents.
β€’ Visiting several federal recreation sites? Compare the America the Beautiful Pass before buying separate entrance passes.
*We have the America the Beautiful for $0

πŸ₯ͺ PACK A PICNIC
β€’ Yellowstone has 52 picnic areas, so pack a cooler, drinks, snacks and lunch instead of purchasing every meal.
β€’ Remember, most picnic areas do not have running water, so bring plenty with you.

🐴πŸ›₯️ PLAN ACTIVITIES AHEAD

β€’ Decide which paid experiences, such as boating or horseback riding, matter most to your family before your trip.
β€’ Check operating dates and availability before arriving so you aren't planning around something that's closed or unavailable.

πŸ’‘ BEST TIP:
Build your Yellowstone days by area.
Seeing nearby attractions together can reduce unnecessary backtracking, save fuel and give you more time to actually enjoy the park.
