We’ve been overwhelmed by the response to The Estate at Meander’s 300th Birthday Celebration — and tickets are going quickly.

A host to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, General Lafayette, William Wirt and others who shaped the nation, this celebration is both a tribute to the past and a toast to the next chapter of this remarkable property.

Located just outside Culpeper and Orange in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, The Estate at Meander is a historic inn, restaurant, and wellness destination currently undergoing an exciting restoration and expansion — including the upcoming launch of Elim Spa Village this Fall.

Something transformative is beginning in the Virginia countryside.

Nestled within the storied grounds of The Estate at Meander, a new kind of wellness experience is taking shape — one rooted in nature, ritual, restoration, and nearly 300 years of history.

Born in Somersetshire, England, and educated at Oxford University, Joshua Fry arrived in Virginia in the 1720s with a scholar’s mind and a pioneer’s ambition.

As the first professor of mathematics and philosophy at the College of William & Mary, he helped shape a generation of colonial leaders before turning his focus to surveying, governance, and exploration.

On June 11, 1726 Fry patented roughly 4,000 acres along the Robinson River, whose winding course inspired the name “Meander Plantation.” Here he established his family estate — a frontier homestead of order, intellect, and hospitality on Virginia’s western edge. The manor stood as both residence and waypoint, overlooking the fertile valley that still defines the property today.

In 1749, Fry partnered with Peter Jefferson (father of Thomas Jefferson) to create A Map of the Most Inhabited Part of Virginia and Maryland (1751), the first accurate map of the colony. Their work charted rivers, mountains, and settlements — including the Robinson River valley where Meander lies — anchoring the estate in the very geography Fry helped define.

A man of science who became a soldier, Fry rose to Commander-in-Chief of the Virginia Militia at the outbreak of the French and Indian War. He died from injuries sustained from a fall from his horse in the field near Fort Cumberland in 1754. Fry was succeeded in command by a young George Washington (22 years at the time) and as they say, the rest is history.
