We’d like to believe our pioneer ancestors would have stopped for a 360 video.. that or fainted. What we do know is that they would have looked fantastic regardless!

🏛️ Museum Monday! 🏛️

The history of Levi Jackson Wilderness Road Park is standing tall once again! We are thrilled to announce that the Defeated Camp wall has been fully restored.

This incredibly fast turnaround was made possible thanks to a generous donation from the Laurel County Historical Society and FEMA funds administered by the London Tourism Board.

📜 A Quick Dive into History
The Significance: The Defeated Camp cemetery is the final resting place of 24 victims and the historic site of McNitt’s Defeat, which occurred on October 3, 1786. This very site is the heart of—and the entire reason for—the creation of Levi Jackson Wilderness Road Park.

The Original Wall: One of the very first projects completed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) at the park was building this protective stone wall around the cemetery area. (See Picture 1)

🌪️ The Damage & The Comeback
Over the years, time and weather took their toll, leaving the wall with large cracks and structural wear. Then, in May of 2025, a tornado caused a massive tree to fall directly on it, completely taking out a large section. (See Picture 2)

Enter Aaron Lockaby and his crew! They initiated repairs and restoration just last week, working tirelessly to complete the project in just a few days—perfectly timed for Memorial Day weekend.

👀 See the Transformation!
As you can see in Picture 3, the wall has been beautifully restored to its original condition. Swipe through to check out the dramatic before-and-after photos to see the incredible transformation for yourself!

We warmly invite you to come out this week, see the restored wall in person, and explore the Mountain Life Museum.
