Whitney Portal is the base camp and where the trail starts for the 22-mile round-trip hike to Mount Whitney. Whitney Portal is located just 13 miles west of Lone Pine. We are just a short drive away from Mammoth Lakes, which is home to Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort where thousands of people flock to during the winter season to enjoy some great skiing or snowboarding.
