***Update on Ongoing Remediation Efforts at Ellison Creek Reservoir***
According to the latest Railroad Commission inspectors’ field observations, remediation work across much of the reservoir is showing significant progress, particularly on the western shoreline where cleanup operations appear to be nearing completion in some areas.
Inspection findings indicate that many previously impacted areas on the west side of the reservoir are now mostly clear of visible pollution. However, some sections of shoreline still show minor residual impacts, including a light oil sheen and hydrocarbon odor in shoreline vegetation and sediment.
On the eastern side of the reservoir, crews continue to actively contain and remediate affected areas. Containment booms remain in place, with some light oil sheen observed within contained zones and around nearby dock structures. Additional areas where vegetation was previously removed show no remaining signs of contamination, indicating successful localized remediation in these areas.
At the original release point, inspectors noted a small amount of remaining oil sheen on the water surface, and multiple containment booms remain in place. While surrounding land areas show improvement, some soil at the release site still exhibits hydrocarbon odor, indicating that remediation is not yet fully complete in that location.
Water testing conducted during the inspection showed salinity levels at 0.1 parts per thousand across all tested locations, indicating no significant change in water composition related to the incident.
Morris County officials remain in communication with the parties responsible and state agencies to monitor cleanup progress and ensure that all necessary remediation standards are met.
Our top priority is the protection of our natural resources and the safety of our citizens. We will continue to provide updates as state agencies provide us meaningful information.
