This is the bathroom in the Maurice Room at the farmhouse we finished this summer. Swipe to see where it started..!

The sink counter is an old workbench we sourced from another farm in France. It had spent its first life holding tools, and it came to us with every mark still on it, the vice still fixed to its leg. On top sits a heavy stone vessel, chosen to rest against the original stone wall rather than compete with it.

We work this way on purpose. Before we buy anything new, we look for what already exists: pieces with a past, materials that come from the earth and age well. Wood, stone, linen.

The house told us the rest. The stone wall was always the best thing in the room, so we built around it instead of covering it. Everything else is there to sit quietly beside it.

Years ago, Kris started learning materials the only way that actually teaches you anything.. by hand, at the farmhouse, trying them, getting them wrong sometimes, seeing how they age and how they hold up.

Plaster, stone, cement, wood. What looks right on day one and what still looks right five years later. That kind of knowledge doesn’t come from a course, it comes from living with your own decisions.

These days that same instinct goes with him into every new space, France, the US, wherever the work is. Still starts the same way it always has: hands in the material.
