Please join us this evening for our monthly Stated Meeting Dinner. Our doors are open to all prospects with an interest in Freemasonry and of course any traveling brethren. Dinner begins at 6:30 P.M. and is followed by our Stated Meeting.

We had a relaxed month at the lodge as we welcomed the sun back at the vernal equinox. There was plenty of ritual practice and a Fellow Craft took a big step on his Masonic journey. Here’s a recap of the month’s events.

Brother John G. Downey was a founding member of our Lodge and a prominent figure in local and state politics in the mid-19th century. Beginning with the Los Angeles Common Council in 1852 and 1856, then serving in the California State Assembly from 1856-1857. Bro. Downey was then elected Lieutenant Governor in 1859 and became the seventh Governor of California on January 14, 1860.

Following his political service in Sacramento, Brother Downey returned to Los Angeles and, along with Brother Isaias Hellman, founded the University of Southern California in 1879. In addition, his land in Los Angeles was subdivided and incorporated as the City of Downey which today has a population of over 110,000.
