Located in the heart of the eclectic beach community of Venice, Calif., long a hotbed of eco-conscious living and artistic expression, these three cottages offer charming, sustainable getaways available for weekly and monthly rentals, location shooting and private events. The cottages, originally built in 1922, have been renovated from the ground up, using repurposed original wood from the site, e

nergy-efficient appliances and a treasure trove of vintage furnishings, local art and personal touches. Transforming these one-time crack houses into authentic “green” houses, husband and wife entrepreneurs Karel Samsom and Cynthia Foster created solar-powered urban retreats that meet the needs of both comfort and conscience. The original owners combined their backgrounds in environmental economics, academia, entrepreneurship and theater to create this labor of love and standout example of thoughtful sustainability. Though the three cottages share the same floor plan, they offer three unique experiences. On the corner of Grand Boulevard (a street that used to be Venice’s widest canal) and Andalusia is the “Papa Hemingway Cottage” that resembles an earthy, warm Northwoods cabin. Next is “Aunt Zoë’s Place” that exudes a 1950’s kitschy lake cottage style, complete with hand-painted cherry checkerboard kitchen floors and a wrought iron bed. The third-in-a-row is “Cottage Le Bébé,” a candied Baroque combination of mid-century modern and late sixties France that is full of wit and whimsy in Parisian blue, candy apple-red and chrome. Kelly LaPlante, one of the original and most respected organic interior designers in the country, was the interior design consultant who helped guide the project.
