Not all ropes with a core and cover are created equal. đź‘€

Let’s clear something up:
Double braid and kernmantle are related — but not identical.

“Kernmantle” is often used as a general term for ropes with a core (kern) and a sheath (mantle).
But in its most precise sense, it describes parallel core constructions.

A double braid, on the other hand, features a braided core and a braided cover.

So yes — similar concept, but different structure and performance characteristics.

. A harness may seem fine to you but still be unsafe. It’s not up to our individual comfort. This harness came back from a rental with abrasion and we removed it from service. Here’s why:

Climbing Sutra’s 10% rule is simple: when 10% of the fiber on any attachment points or buckle straps is lost due to cutting or abrasion, the harness should be retired or sent to Climbing Sutra for inspection.

No exceptions. No “I’ll watch it.”

This isn’t about visible wear you can live with. It’s about structural integrity you can’t see degrading. Dynamic loads and shock forces can exceed body weight many times over. A 10% reduction in fiber cross section means less capacity to absorb those forces, and that safety margin exists for a reason.

Check your gear and do a visual/physical inspection before every use. Run your fingers over attachment points and straps. Feel for thinning, roughness, or fraying. When in doubt, retire it.

Someone’s life is riding on the safety margin you just inspected. Protect it.

UV Degradation in Performer Flying Harnesses:

Ultraviolet exposure silently degrades harness nylon, reducing its breaking strength by approximately 30% after just four months of regular outdoor use.

UV radiation breaks down polymer chains in nylon fibers, causing brittleness and reduced load capacity even when the harness appears visually intact. This degradation accelerates with cumulative exposure and is not reversible.

Store harnesses away from direct sunlight when not in use, if it's preventable. Your or other performers' lives may depend on it. If your gear sees regular outdoor use, inspect more frequently and consider replacement intervals shorter than standard manufacturer recommendations.

Petzl Other. User feedback alerted us to premature wear of the screws on the gated ventral attachment point on ASTRO rope access harnesses manufactured before October 2023 (harnesses that were affected by our call for inspection of ASTRO and CANYON GUIDE harnesses in 2023).

Discontinuity in rope diameter may indicate damage to the core of your rope.

Overloading or shock loading can stress the core of the rope and cause a break in the core.

When discontinuity is spotted, you should open the cover and inspect the core, if the core is broken the rope will need to be replaced.

Unlike other entertainment truss, our Modular truss for stunt rigging is designed to be loaded in any direction or at any angle. It’s also extremely strong while being lightweight. You can fit an entire ground support structure in the back of a pickup truck or van and assemble it without the need for scissor lifts or other heavy machinery. Inquire to rent today
