Lucy Mattei, the matriarch of our storied Tavern, was a defining presence in the Valley. Firm in her beliefs around alcohol, she shaped a thoughtful balance within a house built to welcome travelers.

From this came a separate barroom just beyond the dining annex, marked by the gold-painted sign you know well: “Mattei’s Bodega.”

Today, her legacy lives on in the details layered throughout the property and in the chef’s garden named in her honor. Join us Sunday, March 29 as we step back in time to celebrate 125 years of stagecoach legacy.

A face you may recognize from the portraits across The Tavern. The name woven into its history. The man who started it all.

Swiss émigré and former dairy farmer Felix Mattei was a betting man. In the late 1800s, he built a tavern and lodging house across from the Los Olivos train terminal, convinced that travelers arriving by rail would welcome a good meal and a place to rest before continuing their journey by stagecoach.

That wager would shape Los Olivos for generations.
