The Kentucky State Fair starts today. 🎡 Whether you’re a Louisville local or staying with us at Hotel Genevieve, we suggest making a visit.

A little Kentucky State Fair history: the first fair was held in 1902 at Churchill Downs. In 1906, a dedicated Kentucky State Fairgrounds opened in West Louisville. The current Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center—near the airport, west of I-65 and north of I-264—first welcomed crowds in 1956.

And while you’re there, make sure to say hi to Freddy Farm. Just a 15-minute drive from Hotel Genevieve, it’s an easy stop before heading to the airport—or a fun addition to your Louisville itinerary.

Bring an extra friend, claim a bed for yourself, or use the other one for napping, sleeping, or, naturally, laying out your entire wardrobe.

We’re excited to welcome new and familiar faces back to UofL next week. ❤️🖤

Parents — if you still need a place to stay while moving your student in, we have a few rooms left. Just a 10-minute drive from campus.

Students, here’s some unspoken Louisville rules to know before you start your year:

•You must go to White Castle and get a Big Red with your meal at least once on Eastern Pkwy (only late night counts)
• You will see a semi get stuck in the “can opener” on campus. Don’t be scared — this happens way more than you think
• By the end of the year (really first semester), you should be able to say Louisville correctly (hint: you kind of swallow the middle syllables). The local pronunciation sounds closest to "LOO-uh-vəl" or "Luh-vuhl."
• Pack Zyrtec or any allergy medicine you have
• You will run into people you know — accept it, embrace it, or ignore it like a lot of us do sometimes when we're in a rush
• You will be asked where you went to high school
