In 2009, Kyle Meyer earned a fellowship to document the HIV and AIDS epidemic in Eswatini (formerly named Swaziland), a southern African nation with the world’s highest rate of HIV infection. While there, Meyer learned weaving from local blanket and basket makers, a skill he applies to the photographs in this series, Interwoven, in which his own identity as a gay man is intertwined with the men he interviewed, who are identified only by number and letter, but whose eyes are a focal point of the image. Exploring homosexuality in the hyper-masculine culture of Eswatini, where homosexuality is still illegal, Meyer’s photographs offer a chance for these men to express themselves and be seen, revealing untold stories of the Unidentified.

✨ Come view this artwork in our current exhibition, “Revival: Digging Into Yesterday, Planting Tomorrow”.

Comprised of individually painted toothpicks, check out Maxim Wakultschik’s optical portrait of Frida Kahlo in our current exhibition, ‘Revival: Digging Into Yesterday, Planting Tomorrow’! 👀

Kahlo’s life and art practice embody revival and resilience; through her art, she attempted to transcend her physical and emotional suffering and loss. Kahlo contracted polio at the age of six, and then survived a life-threatening bus accident at eighteen; she endured more than thirty operations in her lifetime, and lived with severe, chronic pain. Her ongoing management of physical trauma was often the subject and the inspiration for her work, exploring an intimate relationship between the self and the body.
