In 2009, Kyle Meyer earned a fellowship to document the HIV and AIDS epidemic in Eswatini (formerly named Swaziland), a southern African nation with the world’s highest rate of HIV infection. While there, Meyer learned weaving from local blanket and basket makers, a skill he applies to the photographs in this series, Interwoven, in which his own identity as a gay man is intertwined with the men he interviewed, who are identified only by number and letter, but whose eyes are a focal point of the image. Exploring homosexuality in the hyper-masculine culture of Eswatini, where homosexuality is still illegal, Meyer’s photographs offer a chance for these men to express themselves and be seen, revealing untold stories of the Unidentified.
