IMAGINE THIS
You wake from the familiar and yet disjointed sound of your morning work alarm. It kind of sounds like birds, but you’ve heard this alarm for years now. All it reminds you of now is that it’s time to start another monotonous day of work.
Good thing: it’s Friday! You packed your car last night, so as soon as you get off you only have to swing home for the dog (who is ecstatic, by the way.) Then: camping!!!
The hours of the day move slow. Of course, time crawls when you are anticipating something.
Then, it’s time! Clock out, leave that place behind.
Get the dog. (He’s got his head out of the window, he’s enjoying the ride up Jerusalem Hill.)
You watch for deer - the dog does, too.
Then you arrive. Take a deep breath of that fresh, hill air. Your body is still in motion from work, so you don’t start with your tent. You pull out your camping chair and set it up, facing the valley. You can see four different hills from your site! Finally, your body slows. Your deep breath gets deeper. Muscles unclench. You’re safe here.
You unpack and set up the tent while the dog finds a Very Good stick.
The sunset is beautiful. The night is peaceful. A soft breeze, the crackle of a fire, with the dog curled up at your feet.
You go to bed at some point, not even looking at the time, and the moon shines its goodnight.
You wake to birdsong. Real birdsong - nothing like your work alarm. Robins, Red Winged Blackbirds, Starlings. They sing to you of a day of peace and rest. You could take a walk, read a book, maybe play some horseshoes. The important part is that your body has relaxed, that spot of tension you carry from work has lessened.
Are you ready to trade your work alarm for real bird song? (I know the dog is ready for the Very Good stick.)
