Changes to Clark Fork River rafting schedules for a few weeks, it seems.
Cyr Bridge boat slide construction work slated to begin July 27
Launch will remain open to Alberton Gorge floaters
ALBERTON– Construction at the Cyr Bridge Fishing Access Site boat slide is scheduled to begin Monday, July 27. Cyr Bridge is the main put-in for the Alberton Gorge whitewater section of the Clark Fork River, and the slide will remain open during daytime hours, with temporary evening closures (5 p.m.-1 a.m.) on several days, Monday-Thursday only.

The slide will be open during all daytime hours, but floaters can expect some delays and an adjustment to the launching process as portions of the wood and stairs on each side of the slide are replaced. Evening complete slide closures are anticipated for July 28-30 from 5 p.m.-1 a.m. while crews replace entire crossbeams, with the potential for a few additional evening closures during the week of August 3.

The project will ultimately replace all the wood on the slide to keep it in safe condition for boaters using the slide to launch rafts down a steep riverbank. The work is expected to take several weeks to complete. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and construction staff will be on hand to assist boaters with launches during the busiest times.

Game wardens seek information on illegal activity
RED LODGE – Bear conflicts in the Red Lodge area are raising serious alarms for wildlife managers and resulting in FWP having to euthanize numerous bears.

“I’ve never seen bears behaving quite like this,” said Shawn Stewart, a Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks wildlife biologist who has worked in the area for more than five decades. “They’re bolder, breaking into vehicles and homes in broad daylight and approaching, following and even chasing people.”

The cause of this spike in alarming bear activity is almost exclusively linked to bears getting into human food, through unsecured attractants and, in some cases, FWP suspects some people are intentionally feeding bears. This activity is illegal in Montana. Montana state law prohibits the intentional feeding of game animals, including bears, and supplemental feeding through negligent actions involving bird feeders, garbage or other pet or human food attractants.

Bear conflicts in the Red Lodge area have increased the past three years, but nothing like wildlife managers are seeing this year. So far this year, FWP has euthanized six black bears in the area due to severe food conditioning and safety concerns for the public.

Feeding bears and many other wildlife species is not only illegal, but also creates abnormal behaviors in bears and safety risks for the public. The lethal removal of such bears is often the only course of action to keep humans and property safe. Placement in zoos is rarely an option as most zoos don’t have capacity for more bears, and if they did, they generally want young cubs.

Some black and grizzly bears in the Red Lodge area have become aggressive and bold around humans. FWP suspects intentional feeding is contributing to this abnormal behavior.

In the Rock Creek Valley, the river corridor, which goes through much of the area, is a natural pathway and habitat for bears. Both black and grizzly bears are common. It’s critical that residents secure attractants to avoid conflicts.

Anyone with possible information about intentional wildlife feeding is encouraged to visit tipmont.mt.gov to provide details or contact FWP warden Matt Heaton at 406-860-7806 or [email protected]. Those who report information may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.

Take note if you are planning a fishing trip. The hot days are causing the fish in our rivers to be stressed, so some restrictions have been placed by FWP.

Hoot-owl restrictions take effect today, Saturday, July 11 at 2 p.m. on the following rivers:

North-central Montana:

Sun River – from the Highway 287 bridge to the mouth of Muddy Creek

Southwest Montana:

Lower Madison River – From Warm Springs Fishing Access Site to the confluence with the Jefferson River

Madison River above Hebgen Reservoir – From the upstream most Yellowstone National Park boundary to Hebgen Reservoir

Lower Beaverhead River – From Highway 41 near East Bench Road and Beaverhead Rock to its confluence with the Big Hole River

Much is still the same here in this beautiful section of Montana, Bicycle riders still stopping here for a nights' rest and boats still floating the river and fishing still a relaxing sport. Thirteen years has sped by in a flash.

We love this time of year, when the most interesting guests grace this beautiful property along with the beautiful flowers and wildlife. A Bicycle traveler from Virginia, and two wonderful artists from Arizona, one a wood carver, who gave me this little interesting face carved from a golf ball, and the other making the most beautiful creations from leather. Lots of visiting and crafting during those visits. All enjoying our beautiful neck of these woods here at the Lozeau Lodge Property, and practicing the old art of wood carving on the porch. .

It is the most beautiful spring weather here at the Lozeau Lodge Property, and getting outdoors to enjoy it as much as possible while the flowers are blooming so beautifully they make it sparkle. Almost breathtaking to see. I hope everyone is enjoying this amazing weekend. Annie
