Big Sable Point Lighthouse is 112 feet tall and you cannot drive to it. 🏮

The only way in is a mile and three quarters of sand road from the Ludington State Park lot, on foot or on a bike, with Lake Michigan on one side and the dunes on the other. Somewhere around the halfway mark the trees drop away and the black and white tower appears over the grass like it has been waiting for you.

It was lit in 1867 after too many schooners went down on the sandbars between Ludington and Manistee. The original brick tower started crumbling in the lake wind, so around 1900 they wrapped the whole thing in steel plates and painted it in bands. That is why it looks like no other light on the coast.

Volunteer keepers still live there two weeks at a time in the summer, hauling supplies in by golf cart and climbing 130 steps to check the lantern room.
