to 1880 when a team of scientists from the Smithsonian Institution visited the caverns, leading to widespread recognition of their significance. Their report concluded that “there is probably no other cave in the world more completely and profusely decorated with stalactite and stalagmite ornamentation than that of Luray.” Aw, shucks.
