Pretty cool!
If you’ve been walking the shoreline in Madeira Beach and noticed the rock structures stretching into the water — those are beach groins, and they’re doing something pretty amazing 🌊
All 22 concrete groins have been rebuilt last summer to protect and strengthen our shoreline for the next 50 years. 🙌
And here’s what makes it even more special — installing groins was a smart move the city made back in the 1950s. That forward-thinking decision is still protecting our beach today. 👏
Unlike many other towns in Pinellas County that rely heavily on repeated beach renourishment, these structures directly retain sand by slowing longshore currents and holding it in place.
The result:
• A wider, cleaner, more stable beach
• Stronger storm protection
• Healthier dunes and native vegetation
• Better nesting areas for shorebirds and sea turtles
• Sandbars that support marine life
For a coastal town that depends on tourism and treasures its wildlife, this isn’t just infrastructure — it’s long-term environmental stewardship.
Those “rocks in the water”?
They’ve been quietly protecting paradise since the ’50s — and that’s pretty incredible. 🌴
