TRAVEL TIP OF THE WEEK: Traveling Beneath The Waves

Whether you are a beginner or just need a refresher, this week's Travel Tip Tuesday explores what elements to consider for your next trip below the surface.

Gear Up Sensibly

Do your homework, watch for sales, and then when the time is right, make your move to save money.

Buy Don't Rent - This may seem counter-intuitive, but when you’re looking at the big picture it’s less costly to buy scuba gear and/or snorkeling equipment than it is to rent. This becomes more apparent the longer you own your items, which can be a very long time given proper care. Though it may make sense initially to rent your gear until you've determined what sizes and brands best suit your needs, owning will reduce the expense of future dives to little more than air tank refills and cleaning supplies.

Consider a One-Brand Package Deal - Find three or four big items that strike your fancy, all from the same manufacturer, and buy them together as a package deal. Doing so will afford you more room to negotiate down the sticker price(s).

Ask For Free Air - When making a major gear purchase, it's a good idea to request a little extra from the vendor (e.g. Five free tank refills as part of the sale). Such requests are often granted, particularly by established dive stores.

Shop Around For Used And Generic Items - Dry boxes, general-purpose bags, first-aid kits, tools — anything you need that’s not unique to diving may likely be found for less money at big box stores.

Keep Top Of Mind...

Always thoroughly check your equipment before every dive. Take care of your gear, and it will take care of you. Wash and soak each item in fresh water after every saltwater dive, and allow them to dry thoroughly out of the sun to maximize their lifespan. With regular inspections you can detect and fix small tears and loose fasteners before they turn into costly problems. Warning signs of faulty equipment include air leaks, broken buckles, strange smelling/tasting air, and a jumping needle on your air gauge when you take a breath out of your regulator. Store your gear someplace dry that is out of the sun.

While you're under the surface, it’s easy to be mesmerized by what exists below you. Don't forget to look upward into the blue every once in a while. Much of the time that is where the larger sea creatures or schools of fish will be located. Enjoy exploring the countless sights there are to see, and bring with you a waterproof camera to record all the fascinating things that are indeed unlike anything on Earth.

Pick Your Perfect Venue

Do you prefer wrecks, sea life, caverns, drift dives, underwater scenery - some of each? Give thought to what sounds best and determine your diving location based off of what you're after. Do you want to be somewhere that’s ideal for beginners? Somewhere that’s known for its photographic brilliance? There are endless diving locations available to meet your every preference. Check out the Cayman Islands or The Great Barrier Reef for great diving opportunities.

How to keep your valuables safe on vacation.

Did you know that you may be more susceptible to having your valuables, such as watches and cellphones, stolen when you’re on vacation? Here are some tips to follow:

LIMIT WHAT YOU BRING Most travelers bring valuables on their trip that they don’t need, like expensive watches and jewelry. If losing an item will cause you significant financial loss, don’t bring it. If a high-value item is a must, buy a travel insurance policy that covers personal property loss so you can recoup your money in case of a theft.

DON’T BE FLASHY Avoid being outwardly showy, but realize that showiness can be interpreted differently depending on your location. If you’re in London, for example, you won’t be conspicuous if you’re toting the latest cellphone. But in less-privileged countries you’ll be perceived as extremely affluent.

DITCH THE IN-ROOM SAFE You’re not the only one with access to it. It is quite likely that several hotel employees, including members of the housekeeping and maintenance staff, can open the safe with a master combination. So how do you store your valuables? Many four- and five-star properties have a central safe accessible to only a small number of people. Guests can’t open the safe themselves, but they can ask that valuables be stored there.

AVOID DISTRACTIONS Criminals choose victims who appear unfamiliar with their surroundings or who are otherwise distracted. If you don’t know your destination well, stay alert as you walk through the streets, and duck into a coffee shop or store if you need to stop and look at your phone for directions.

SKIP SOCIAL MEDIA You may want to share the good time you’re having on your vacation by posting pictures throughout your trip. Savvy criminals monitor social media and have tools to pinpoint your exact geographic location. They see how you’re dressed and will seek you out for your valuables.

Travel Tip Of The Day
Packing for Outdoor Adventures

Exploring the outdoors? Follow these basic tips for the freedom to take part in spontaneous adventures without feeling unprepared. Happy travels!

Research

Research the area, climate, and culture before packing. Understanding these key aspects will help you pack the true essentials. Doing this will lighten your pack or take away the anxiety of feeling unprepared.

The Trilogy Rule

Three pairs of socks. Three pairs of underwear. Three shirts. You can get more miles out of leg wear, so two pairs of pants and one culturally appropriate pair of shorts or a skirt should suffice. Choose light, flowing, quick-dry cotton-poly blends in matching colors that handle wrinkles well.

Necessities

Outdoor adventure packs should always carry either a prepackaged first-aid kit. Make sure it can fit in a one-liter Ziploc bag. Items to include are sunscreen, bug spray, antiseptic wipes, gauze pads, adhesive bandages, ibuprofen, antihistamine, and a first-aid manual or information cards. No matter what you are doing that day, always have it with you.

Always, Always Bring A Headlamp

Headlamps are more useful than most think. When the sun goes down you will need light and the full use of your hands. Setting up a tent, carrying sticks to burn, and reading a book become a hassle while holding a flashlight. Free your hands up and bring a headlamp.

Travel Tip of the Day:
Secrets The Airlines Don’t Want You To Know

The airline industry has evolved into a well-oiled machine capable of handling more than 100,000 flights per day around the world. It is not surprising that we are unaware of everything happening behind the scenes. Here are our top airline secrets every flier should know.

Say “No” To Vouchers

Airlines will offer passengers a travel voucher if a flight is overbooked. Do not accept the first voucher offered to you. Airlines will increase the offer until there are enough volunteers willing to give up their seats. If there are not enough volunteers, airlines will involuntarily select passengers to leave the plane. If this happens to you, insist on cash compensation instead of a travel or meal voucher. The Department of Transportation states that a passenger is entitled to as much as $1,300 in cash depending on the ticket price and how long you are delayed.

Delayed Luggage Compensation

If your bag is delayed, not lost, airlines will offer you $25 - $50 per day until the bag is returned. The Department of Transportation states that this is not reasonable compensation for the potential disruption to a wedding, ski trip, or business trip a delayed bag might have. Airlines may compensate you up to $3,500 for necessary items purchased for a domestic US trip. Be sure to keep all receipts before your bags are returned to ensure appropriate compensation.

Cheapest Days To Fly

Airlines carry fewer business passengers on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday. These days often leave the airlines with a surplus of seats so they are listed at a lower fare. If your plans are flexible, make sure to select a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday as your arrival and/or departure dates. Be aware that the date you purchase your ticket is irrelevant.

Travel Tip Tuesday

Packing Guide for Photographers

Both professional and amateur photographers need to keep their bag light as they travel. Follow these tips for a baseline checklist to make sure you are properly prepared to capture the beauty around you.

Camera Bag

Protection, comfort, and security are essential when carrying around your gear. Make sure your pack is top quality. Look for bags that include anti-theft features, attached rain cover, and camera/laptop protection. Buy brands that design their bags with traveling in mind.

Keep Your Equipment Light

Mirrorless and compact cameras are great for lightening your load. If you bring your SLR, reduce the weight of your bag by first considering the pros and cons of zoom vs prime lenses. A zoom lens offers convenience and may require fewer shots, but a single, fixed lens typically weighs less and will encourage you to explore more of the area to get the perfect shot.

Exclude As Much As You Can

It is natural to want to over pack for the fear of forgetting something. Some photographers arrive at their destination only to mail home those extra items. Pack only what you know how to use well. Fumbling around with unfamiliar equipment in a foreign place will draw attention and make locals uncomfortable. You will ultimately have to decide what equipment to bring to get your desired shots.

Stock Up On Batteries And Memory Cards

The lithium ion batteries required in some larger cameras can be difficult to find when traveling. Pack extra batteries and a charger. SD and memory cards can be purchased on the go, but they will most likely be more expensive.

Camera Protection

Rain covers, Ziploc bags, and lens cloths are necessary if you plan to be in a wet environment. Thankfully, all of these are compact and lightweight. Make sure to have water housing if you know you’re going to want some underwater shots.

TRAVEL TIP TUESDAY
Get Through Customs Faster

With a few simple planning tips, you can reduce your wait time at the airport and get on with your adventure.
Line Etiquette
Have your documents ready
Keep your answers to the officer brief and to the point
Fill out all your forms on the plane before you land (bring a pen)
Don’t declare anything if not necessary to avoid inspection
Avoid using your cell phone
Don’t take any pictures for security reasons

Carry-on Only

It’s a good idea to travel light when you can. Doing so will save time, money and possibly frustration over lost bags too. Whenever possible, bring only carry-on luggage to avoid fees and long waits at the baggage carousel. Perhaps the best aspect of carry-on items is the luxury of being able to move about freely without needing to drag along heavy baggage through the airport.
Nothing To Declare
As you approach Customs, you will see green lanes marked “Nothing to Declare” and red lanes marked “Goods to Declare.” If you have nothing to declare, you will hand your form to an officer and stroll out the exit. If you do have items to declare, you will have to pay tax on them before you leave the airport.

Bags Being Searched? No Big Deal
If you travel enough, you are bound to have your bags searched eventually. Consider it a merit badge on your growing list of travel experiences. Answer the officer’s questions in a straightforward manner. They will inspect your belongings for contraband, and then you will be cleared to re-pack your things and continue on your way.

Global Entry
Global Entry will shorten the amount of time spent in security and Customs' lines. After proving you are a low-risk traveler, you will no longer deal with the hassle of removing laptops, shoes, jackets and liquids in line. Citizens of the United States, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Panama, South Korea, and the U.K. are eligible.
By using these tips as a guideline, you can better organize and prepare for your trip. Stay tuned to Travel Tip Tuesdays for more in-depth information about the best way to travel.
