The river's calling it. 🛟

Saturday and Sunday are still floatable — but fair warning: the water's low, and some walking will be required. Wear river shoes, bring your sense of humor, and consider it a float with a little hike mixed in.

The Dan is SUPER low right now, and low water means a River Hike instead of a float — and y'all deserve better than that. So we're doing the hard, right thing: the 2026 season officially wraps Sunday, 9/6. No Labor Day floats. We'll use the day to reflect, regroup, and politely curse Mother Nature. 😄

We could squeeze one more day out of it. We'd rather send you home loving this river than limping off it. That's the Floatery way.

Thank you for sticking with us through the most interesting and challenging summer in Floatery history — every laugh, every "one more time." You're the reason.

Rest up, Dan River. We'll see you in the spring…

Can we talk about weather post-2020 for a second? 😂

The weatherman cannot predict it. The apps cannot predict it. Meteorologists with all their fancy radars and doppler technology and 15 years of education cannot predict it.

So when customers ask us “what does the weather look like?”

I don’t know Jessica. It looks a lot like THIS image at ZERO percent chance. 🤬

We monitor the weather more than most small businesses on the planet because we literally live by it — and even WE get surprised.

That is not a Floatery problem. That is a post-2020 weather problem. 🙏🌊

We share the forecast with the data provided. We post the Float Gauge. We send the emails. We make the calls.

After that — the decision to float is yours. And when a pop-up storm appears out of absolutely nowhere on a zero percent day — we need you to remember that we cannot control Mother Nature any more than the weatherman can.

Something important every floater should understand — the Dan River banks are privately owned on this 4 mile route. Once you are on the water you cannot simply exit mid-float during a storm. Your best option is to pull your tubes onto the nearest bank, move away from the water, and wait it out. NC pop-up storms are typically over in 10 minutes or less. The alternative is a search and rescue call — and that bill is on you, honestly by the time they get there the storm will be over.

The Float Thru Café: The Whole Honest Story 💙

Friends — a lot of you have planned river days around the café opening this season. You've asked, we've given you vague answers, and you deserve better than vague. So here it is, all of it.

The café is real, and she's ready. Over the past year, we built the Float Thru Café from the ground up as her own licensed food business — full county plan review, health permitting, costly commercial equipment, and a chef running the kitchen. We developed a menu we're genuinely proud of: gourmet brats and dogs, hand-built sweets, and delicious one of a kind drinks. that we cannot WAIT to put in your hands. We even turned down trendy add-ons that didn't meet our picky standards, because I am a true Foodie. This wasn't a side hustle we threw together. It was a serious investment and a year of work — because our whole plan has always been about one thing: giving you an experience on this river that you can't get anywhere else.

So why isn't she open? Because this season, the river we planned around stopped being the river we have. Before any of the river park across from us was built was built, we asked — nicely, and in writing — that rock not be added to the water between our property and the new river park, because of everything we'd built and planned at Floatery. The decision was made to add it anyway. Sharp rock was placed in the river this year as part of the Town of Madison's river-park project — right where our river tubers have to float, and the entire floating café experience we designed around the River Access area. We've formally requested its removal. In the meantime, we had to move our whole river access to keep your tubes and your feet safe, and the setup we spent a year planning simply doesn't exist anymore. We faced a choice: open the café in conditions we'd spend all day apologizing for, or hold her back until she's what you deserve.

Here's the truth about how we make decisions: we don't do this for the money. If this were about money, the café would've opened months ago, half-magic, and we'd have cashed your patience. We do this for the experience — for the day you drive home already planning your next float. And our rule is simple: where we have control (very important statement), we will always control it. The river changed in ways we didn't control. The café is something we do control — so she opens when she's five-star, and not one day sooner.

The new plan: the café is moving to the top of the property, where we intend to run her through the off-season — real service, real menus, working out every detail — so her full 2027 launch is flawless from day one.

To everyone who planned around her this summer: we're sorry, and we're right there with you — bummed and frustrated. Thank you for caring enough to keep asking. We went back and forth on sharing all this publicly, but we'd rather tell you the truth than keep making excuses for decisions that weren't ours.

One small ask: please keep the comments kind. We're a small crew, we're running on fumes this season, and we're doing our very best with the river we've been given. 💙

POV: You're back at base doing Rain Man math on your fingers and toes 🧮 "17 floaters... 3.5 hours... they left at... carry the one..." They're LATE. Mama Bear mode: ACTIVATED. 🐻

Then the radio crackles: "We have 3 people."

THREE?! I'M SORRY, THREE?? "ARE YOU BRINGING THEM BACK—"

And then they send me this. 📸 "Just kidding mama bear... we got all 17 and are on the way."

I have the best staff and the best customers and I have never aged 10 years faster in my life. 💙 This is the art of river fun, folks. Beautiful happy faces and we adore each and every one of them.

Y’all. I received this email this morning about our 2027 Firefly Float and I cannot stop laughing. 😂❤️

She has a June birthday. She is traveling from Wilmington NC. She wants all four of her people there.

BUT — and I quote — “Willing to kick two of them out if only room for 2.” 😂😂😂

When it comes to fun there is no sacrifice to big. 🙏 She is my Spirit Human 🤣

Happy early birthday Queen — we will do our very best to keep your whole crew. No sacrifices required. Thank you for making my entire day 🦋✨

From a 5 hour float yesterday… to a 30 minute float today. 🌊

All of that flooding in Surry and Stokes County last night is now in the Dan River and she is rising FAST. 🚨

To everyone who has ever given us a hard time about closing, when its not raining — look at this. 👇

When I arrived this morning the Dan was running at 5,000 CFS. Within 40 minutes she climbed to 7,200 CFS. Normal conditions are 350 CFS.

I have not seen her move this fast in 5 years. 😐

It used to hurt our hearts when customers were unkind to us for making the call to close. But moments like this remind us exactly WHY we make that call without hesitation.

Somewhere out there someone is safe because we refuse to be bullied into opening. And that is all that matters. ❤️

We monitor our entire watershed and all tributaries because we learned a long time ago that the rain falling 50 miles away is what determines whether you float safely or not.

Today is a perfect example of exactly that. 🌊
1. Rain falls upstream — Surry County, Stokes County , Patrick County VA got more rain than they could handle.
Stokes County rain = hits us directly 🎯
Surry County rain = mostly goes to Yadkin River — different system
Patrick County VA rain = hits us directly — Dan River headwaters

2. The watershed collects it all — The Dan River watershed covers approximately 1,840 square miles — that's a MASSIVE collection area. Every drop of rain that falls in that entire area eventually finds its way to the Dan River

3. How it gets there:
Rain hits the ground
Ground gets saturated and can't absorb anymore
Water runs off into creeks, streams, and tributaries
Those creeks and streams flow into the Dan River
All of it converges at the same point — the Dan River channel

4. The river rises — sometimes dramatically fast depending on:
How much rain fell
How saturated the ground already was
How fast it fell
The shape and slope of the terrain
