Horses being Horses:

We spent a lot of money providing shelter for our horses. We have learned that the shelter (at least in this part of the U.S.), like "patting" the horse, is done to make the human feel good.

These guys can walk up to the pole barn and get out of the rain...instead, they choose to stand out in it. We have found the same for any inclement weather, be it rain or snow. Maybe it is because we get so little rain, they prefer to be out in it. 🤠

More Elk!

The elk herd finally moved into drink during the daylight. We prefer these pictures over the ghostly night pictures of the game camera.

Marilyn caught a picture of a young bull elk. Sorry about the angle that got a wire in front of his eyes, but one takes what they can get.

A Blessing From Above!

Rain. Today we received our first significant rain of the summer and hopefully the beginning of a great monsoon season. In just one shower we received a little over 1/2 inch of rain. That is more than we received the entire month of June.

The horses and cattle are going to love it. One can almost hear the grass growing.

Quite a Party!

The elk had quite a party at the stock tank last night.

Elk are called bulls, cows, and calves just like cattle. I get confused when our neighbors are talking about elk and I think they are talking about cattle. One has to listen for context.

I call cattle moo-cows or moo-calves to keep them separate from elk. I'm sure our neighbors laugh at me. But when elk call or bark it sounds more like a squeak to me. Doesn't moo-cow sing better than squeak-cow? 🤠

Tiger Salamander:

Marilyn took this picture of a Tiger Salamander this morning. We have seen a few over the years but they are not common on the ranch.

I remember the first time I saw one of these critters in a stock tank on the White House Ranch. My horse was getting drink from the tank when this sea monster came up through the mill w**d and scared the Bejesus out of us. Salamanders look bigger when they have their gills extended.

We love having the barn swallows around. I refer to them as the fighter pilots of the bird world!

We have a wild fire southwest of us. (Sacaton fire, over 9,000 acres.)

We hate the smoke, because of the effects on our eyes, noses, and it spoils our views. But on the bright side, it makes for some spectacular sunsets.
