Update: Missing hiker Sahil Jilani was found deceased in Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Abrams Falls on Oct. 8.

Jilani's vehicle had been located on Oct. 7 at Abrams Falls trailhead. He was last seen at the Riverstone Campground in Townsend, Tenn., on Oct. 5. Law enforcement and search and rescue staff began a search for him on Oct. 7.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers condolences to Jilani’s family and friends.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is searching for Sahil Jilani. Jilani's vehicle was located today at Abrams Falls trailhead. He was last seen at the Riverstone Campground in Townsend, TN, on 10/5 at 8pm. Jilani 24 years old, 5’9”, 140lbs, and has black hair and brown eyes. He is from Texas.

The elk rut, or mating season, is in full swing at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. While this is one of the most exciting times of year to observe elk, the National Park Service urges visitors to follow required safety regulations to protect both themselves and the animals.

In recent weeks, several visitors have approached elk too closely and have been injured by aggressive bulls. Over the weekend, one visitor who approached elk in the woods sustained an arm puncture and was cited for violating park regulations.

To ensure the safety of both wildlife and people, the park reminds visitors to follow these regulations:

• Keep your distance: It is illegal to approach elk within 25 yards (75 feet) or at any distance that causes an animal to change its behavior because of your presence. Violations may result in fines or arrest.
• Back away if approached: If an elk approaches you, calmly increase your distance by moving away from the animal. It is your responsibility to safely and calmly maintain the legal distance.
• Respect closures and staff direction: Fields around Oconaluftee and Cataloochee are closed to all visitors during the rut. Do not stop on roadways when viewing wildlife and respect all closures. Follow instructions from park rangers and volunteers when viewing wildlife.
• Stay alert and slow down: Wildlife frequently cross roadways. Obey posted speed limits and always remain attentive when driving through the park.
• View wildlife from your vehicle safely: Use designated pull‑offs and ensure your vehicle is completely off the roadway without obstructing traffic.
