The Civil War is usually said to have ended at Appomattox in April 1865. But high in the North Carolina mountains, the fighting flickered on a little longer. 🏔️ One of the very last shots east of the Mississippi may have echoed near Waynesville.

In May 1865, weeks after Lee's surrender, mountain troops were still maneuvering in the rugged country of Haywood County. Confederate soldiers, including Cherokee men of Thomas's Legion, gathered on the heights above Waynesville and lit rings of campfires to make their small force look far larger. 🔥 It was a bluff at the very end of a lost war.

Soon after, they laid down their arms, and the long conflict finally guttered out in the Carolina highlands. There is something haunting about those last mountain campfires, burning for a cause that was already over.

Does it surprise you that the war's final embers may have burned right here in the North Carolina mountains?
