For one of the Smoky Mountains' most stunning riverside walks complete with potential elk sightings, head to the Oconaluftee River Trail in the small mountain town of Cherokee, North Carolina. This easy 1.5-mile path starts at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center and follows right along the river as it makes its way into town. It’s common to see elk grazing in the fields near the visitor center or standing in the shallow water beside the trail. In warmer months, wildflowers bloom along the edges, and thick rhododendron and mountain laurel grow along the banks. The clear river flows beside you the whole time, and you can often spot trout moving through the water. Right near the start, the Mountain Farm Museum has old log cabins that show how families lived here back in the 1800s. The walk is flat, shaded, and full of peaceful mountain views from beginning to end.
