Do you have the Merlin Bird ID app?

I was out working in the cottage butterfly garden at The Cove Cabin today while listening to the birds around the prairie. They were so active that I finally opened Merlin to see who all was out there.

As usual, it picked up an impressive variety of species, including a few I had never identified here before.
Summer Tanager
Field Sparrow
Kentucky Warbler
Prairie Warbler
Acadian Flycatcher
Yellow-Breasted Chat
Plus 25 others we have seen and heard.

On my way out, I stopped to look at the view for a minute and ended up staying a little longer than planned.

Every summer we try to capture the fireflies out here, and every summer the camera falls short of what it actually looks like in person.

Especially at the French Creole Cabin, where the fields begin to glow once the light fades and the fireflies rise into the trees beyond the porch before disappearing into the stars above.

One of our guests recently wrote:
“The fireflies were really amazing over the field too. I grew up out West and we did not have those.”

It’s one of those summer things that’s hard to explain until you see it yourself. 🌿

Just before guests were set to arrive, the rain passed through, the late afternoon breeze cooled down, and the birds took over the gardens and trees. 🌿

One of our favorite kinds of afternoons out here. Summer out here has a way of slowing everything down for a little while.

We don’t get to see this view very often… it’s usually enjoyed by our guests.

Spring is just getting started out here, and summer is when everything really fills in.

For all you mushroom hunters out there - us included 🍄

We haven’t made it out yet this year, but it feels like it’s getting close.
Has anyone started spotting them?

Yeah, you can find morels growing in all kinds of ecosystems. Personally, I tend to have the most luck looking in areas where these trees grow.

How about you? What do your best spots look like?

[P.S. I would’ve also included slippery elm, black walnut, butternut, hackberry, box elder, and a few others, but I ran out of space.]

🐾 IT’S LIVE! Spayapalooza 2026 Fundraiser! 🐾

A big goal this spring - Cobden Spay/Neuter Coalition hopes to spay and neuter 100 cats in March and April and they need our community to help make it happen.
