The French Cabin was already beautiful.

Guests loved it. It stayed booked. By every measure, it was a success.

So why did we remove a bedroom, create a French-inspired parlour, redesign the kitchen, expose hidden beams, and even move the fireplace?

The answer involves a massive piece of schist, a bottle of wine, some late-night wiring sessions, and a vision that wouldn't leave us alone.

Most guests assume this fireplace alcove was always part of the French Creole Cabin.

It wasn't.

Years after we built the cabin, we realized we had listened a little too much to what other people thought it should be and not enough to what we wanted it to become.

So we made a big decision.

We removed an entire bedroom, moved the fireplace and its massive granite surround, exposed the ceiling beams, and transformed the space into something much more intimate and romantic.

This fireplace alcove is where the old second bedroom closet once stood.

Today it's one of our favorite spots in the cabin.

There are dozens of stories like this hidden throughout the cabins. We'll share a few more over the coming weeks.

Summer in Southern Illinois is one of our favorite times of year.

Between local wineries, swimming holes, shaded hiking trails, farmers markets, live music, and small-town events, there is always something new to discover around the Shawnee Hills.

We've been adding more local recommendations and seasonal inspiration to our website lately, including a recent post featuring some of our favorite summer adventures around the region.

Do you have the Merlin Bird ID app?

I was out working in the cottage butterfly garden at The Cove Cabin today while listening to the birds around the prairie. They were so active that I finally opened Merlin to see who all was out there.

As usual, it picked up an impressive variety of species, including a few I had never identified here before.
Summer Tanager
Field Sparrow
Kentucky Warbler
Prairie Warbler
Acadian Flycatcher
Yellow-Breasted Chat
Plus 25 others we have seen and heard.

On my way out, I stopped to look at the view for a minute and ended up staying a little longer than planned.

Every summer we try to capture the fireflies out here, and every summer the camera falls short of what it actually looks like in person.

Especially at the French Creole Cabin, where the fields begin to glow once the light fades and the fireflies rise into the trees beyond the porch before disappearing into the stars above.

One of our guests recently wrote:
“The fireflies were really amazing over the field too. I grew up out West and we did not have those.”

It’s one of those summer things that’s hard to explain until you see it yourself. 🌿

Just before guests were set to arrive, the rain passed through, the late afternoon breeze cooled down, and the birds took over the gardens and trees. 🌿

One of our favorite kinds of afternoons out here. Summer out here has a way of slowing everything down for a little while.
