Green River Ferry Reopens in Mammoth Cave National Park

Ferry service resumes after major repairs to flood-damaged infrastructure

MAMMOTH CAVE, Ky. – The Green River Ferry in Mammoth Cave National Park will reopen March 5 and resume daily operations from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. CST. Ferry service was suspended while the park repaired navigational cables and support towers that were damaged during a flood event in spring 2025.

Ferry system replacements included:
two-1,000-foot navigational cables that guide the ferry across the river
four 20-foot-tall towers which hold the navigational cables in place (some were replaced, some were stabilized)
15.5-ton concrete anchor that was damaged and dislodged from the riverbank during the flood

While drydocked, the ferry was sandblasted and repainted and received a new generator and engine. The vessel also received its United States Coast Guard inspection and certification which is required every five years.

Ferry operations are subject to water levels on the Green River and may be affected by high or low water. Learn more about navigating in and around Mammoth Cave National Park on the Directions and Transportation webpage.

Exploring Underground Wonders: Cave Tours for All Ages

The area's main attraction is undoubtedly Mammoth Cave National Park, with its incredible cave system stretching for miles. The park offers a variety of cave tours suitable for different ages and abilities, making it a fantastic experience for families. For families with younger children or those who prefer an easier walk, the Frozen Niagara Tour is a great choice. This shorter tour takes you to see the beautiful Frozen Niagara formation, which looks like a giant frozen waterfall, and is generally considered easy, with some stairs. The Domes and Drip stones Tour is another popular option for families with slightly older kids who are up for more walking and stairs. This tour showcases a variety of cave features, including large domes and interesting dripstone formations. The Historic Tour is a classic and often recommended for first-time visitors, offering a good overview of the cave's history and large passageways. While it involves more walking and stairs, it's generally manageable for families with school-aged children. For a unique experience, consider the Violet City Lantern Tour, where the cave is lit only by lanterns, giving you a glimpse into how early explorers saw the cave. This tour is rated as moderate to strenuous and involves walking on uneven dirt trails. It's important to note that the Wild Cave Tour is very physically demanding and has a minimum age of 16, making it more suitable for older teens and adults. The park also offers the Trog Tour, which is specifically designed for kids aged 8 to 12, providing a fun, off-trail adventure just for them. Reservations for all cave tours are highly recommended and can be made online or by contacting the park directly. Be sure to check the age and physical requirements for each tour to ensure it's a good fit for your family. Many families have enjoyed the Domes and Dripstones tour with kids as young as 4, finding it engaging and memorable. It's always a good idea to bring an extra jacket as the cave temperature stays around 54°F year-round.
Here's a quick comparison of some family-friendly cave tour options:
Tour Name - Duration - Distance - Difficulty - Minimum Age - Key Features
Frozen Niagara Tour - 1.25 hours - 0.25 miles - Easy - All ages - See the"frozen waterfall"
