What makes a great sitting porch?
1. Plenty of room. No one wants to feel crowded on their porch. A great porch has enough space for comfortable seating, dining, and gathering without everyone feeling on top of one another.
2. An elevated view. A porch should sit high enough above the surrounding landscape to provide a sense of security and perspective. Being slightly elevated enhances the view and creates a more relaxing experience.
3. Protection from the elements. A roof overhead and thoughtful orientation provide shade from the summer sun and shelter from light rain, allowing the porch to be enjoyed in a variety of weather conditions.
4. A connection to nature. The best porches blur the line between indoors and outdoors. Whether overlooking a forest, field, lake, or garden, a porch should make it easy to enjoy fresh air, natural light, and the sights and sounds of the surrounding landscape.
5. Comfortable airflow. A gentle breeze can make even the warmest days enjoyable. Good porch design takes advantage of prevailing winds to keep the space comfortable and inviting throughout the year. Also, it should have a fan.
