We have made the difficult decision to close our business and have sold our property. We are sad that we are closing this chapter of our lives but are looking forward to what comes next (and a vacation)! It has been an amazing (almost) 6 years but it is time for new adventures! Thank you to all the friends, family and guests who have made this an unbelievable journey – we will see you on the flip side (just in case any of you are wondering – we are still taking bookings in the cabin through July 29th and the lodge rooms through August 12th).

MESA VERDE TOUR SCHEDULE 2024

Mesa Verde National Park has just released information for the park’s 2024 tour season. Because the tours are nearly always sold out immediately (2 weeks prior to each tour), it’s a good idea to plan now for the dates you want. The first full day of tours will begin May 12th with a limited number the week of May 6-11. They are available only on Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777.
Here’s the process if you haven’t done it before:
Tickets are released at 8am Mountain time 2 weeks in advance of each day’s tours. It’s a good idea to be on the site by opening time (8am) with the date(s) you want and ready to select your preferred date and time. A delay of even a minute can mean the difference!
Tours of Cliff Palace and Balcony house are $8 per person; backcountry tours are $25 per person (those sites to be announced). You can go to the Park’s website (nps.gov/meve) or its page for new PSA’s every week.

BurroFest Fun and Canyons of the Ancients update!

Any folks who are planning to join us here at Starry Nights Ranch B&B this weekend are in for a special treat. It’s time for Mancos’ 4th annual BurroFest on Saturday, June 17th from 10am to 3pm. The b***os are dressed in costume for which there will be a competition, plus an obstacle course which is always hilarious – trying to get a b***o to go where you want instead of where he wants is a lesson in patience (and hilarity). Artists who choose may be paired with a b***o as a model to create special artwork. The event will be held in downtown Mancos and will have music, beer, food, kid’s activities and lots of b***o fun.
Update on Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum: The museum and visitor center hours are currently intermittent during floor renovations until July 17th. They suggest calling ahead if you are interested in visiting before it is fully open. Dominguez Pueblo and the half-mile trail to Escalante Pueblo, however, remain open during this time.
*Reminder: Remember to go online to RECREATION.gov two weeks in advance of your trip to reserve a ranger-led tour for your visit to Mesa Verde National Park.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!

Spring is in full swing here in Mancos, CO. The wildflowers are truly amazing this year and the weather has been wonderful (now that it has finally stopped snowing)!
Good news! The Mesa Top Loop is now open once again, just in time for the summer season. Construction at most of the sites has been completed and visitors now have the opportunity to visit most of Mesa Verde NP. Tours are also bustling so make sure to reserve your spot as soon as they become available (more info at recreation.gov). Wetherill Mesa will still be closed for construction of a new visitor contact station for at least the remainder of 2023 but there is still so much to do and we are looking forward to the grand opening next year.
Columbine Bar & Grill in downtown Mancos, an historic gathering place for local ranchers and holding one of the oldest tavern licenses in Colorado, has announced that they will now be open seven days a week. Columbine serves traditional American fare with their own twist on many favorites. When you visit, be sure to pay attention to the brands burned into the large center posts – placed there by the ranchers themselves as they gathered in the old tavern. Columbine has just finished a new seating area on the back patio – just in time for the summer season. And a really great place to try their delicious homemade ice cream!

Updates for Mesa Verde National Park

The Wetherill Mesa area of Mesa Verde National Park will be closed for the 2023 season to accommodate the demolition and construction of a new visitor contact station in the Wetherill area. The existing contact station was damaged by the Pony Fire in August 2000 and needs to be replaced. The lightning-caused Pony Fire devastated many of the day-use facilities in the Wetherill area that year and burned 1,352 acres, but no ancestral sites were damaged.

Demolition of the current structure is expected to begin in late April and will involve the removal of large amounts of concrete and steel. Material staging and construction will occur in visitor use areas large truck traffic will be on the narrow roadway resulting in visitor safety concerns.

The project was originally scheduled to be completed in time to open the Wetherill Mesa area to visitors in July. Late winter snowfall will delay contractor access to the site. Additionally, the manufacturing and delivery schedule for the new structure has been delayed by many weeks. Construction of the new contact station may not be complete until late October.

After much discussion regarding safety and the quality of visitor experience, the decision was made to not open Wetherill Mesa to the public in 2023. An additional large waterline replacement project may extend the Wetherill closure through 2024.

Also, starting Monday, April 10, 2023 the Mesa Top Loop will be temporarily closed and is expected to reopen before Memorial Day weekend. The Mesa Top Loop is a 6-mile drive with a series of short trails to excavated ancestral sites located on Chapin Mesa. The Cliff Palace Loop will be open during this time, so visitors may enjoy views of Cliff Palace, Heminway House, House of Many Windows and other ancestral sites.

Visitors and those making travel plans are encouraged to check for closures and alerts on the park website at: www.nps.gov/meve/planyourvisit/closures.htm.

On another note, the Chapin Mesa Museum at Canyon of the Ancients National Monument is expected to reopen Thursday, May 11th, after being closed for renovations. It will be open daily 8:30 to 4:30.

Safe travels!
