🍂 The Big Show!

There’s a little extra magic in the air when fall arrives in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The trees put on their best colors, the air turns crisp, and evenings are made for cozy campfires, warm blankets, and one more cup of something hot. 🍁☕

Take the scenic back roads, settle into a campsite tucked among the trees, and wake up to a forest painted in brilliant reds, oranges, and golds. Every turn brings a new view, and every evening is an invitation to slow down and soak it all in.

The UP is giving summer a beautiful send-off, and trust us, the big show is worth sticking around for. ❤️🍂

We were so excited to welcome this accomplished group of professional environmental women to Campfire Shores to explore the incredible ecology of the UP on our trails. Scientists, landscape, architects, engineers, nonprofit directors, grant administrators… what a fun group to have here reminding us of the many specials habitats on our property!

With most of the group coming from Indiana, the wetlands scientist in the group was thrilled to put her hand on true Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) for the first time in her career. While native and common to MI, it relatively rare and localized in IN. It is found in acidic, soils, pine or oak-heath forests and sandy areas (like our reclaimed dunes here at Campfire Shores). 💚

September in Manistique, Michigan, quietly takes away about an hour and a half of daylight from the beginning to the end of the month. 🌅 It’s one of those sure signs that summer is giving way to fall as the evenings arrive faster. You really notice it around the campfire, when there’s just a little less daylight to set up camp, cook dinner, or squeeze in one more hike. 🏕️

There’s something special about those crisp September nights, though, when the shorter days make the warmth of the fire feel even better. Summer is fading as the forest leaves are preparing for The Big Show that is soon to come.🍂🔥

We want to give a big loving shout out to Wayne, who keeps our campground mowed and looking beautiful. He also packages endless bundles of firewood so they are ready and waiting for all of our s'mores enthusiasts! 💚🔥

This is his last week with us until next season. Enjoy the sunshine of the southwest, Wayne! We are so grateful for you!
