Here is an amazing colorized photo of the large encampment in June 1929, as thousands of people came to witness the dedication of the Navajo Bridge across Marble Canyon, better linking Utah and Arizona by auto.

The Arizona Daily Star reported that during the two days of the dedication program that 2,217 cars, containing more than 8,000 people, crossed over the bridge and about 80% of those crossed back over. It was a busy place in the desert. Photo from NAU's digital collection.
