Weekend Snapshot: June 27–28, 2026
Verdict: This is a full Highway 20 weekend again, but it is not quite a full-summer alpine hiking weekend. SR 20 is open all the way across the North Cascades, so a Newhalem–Diablo–Rainy Pass–Washington Pass–Winthrop trip is back on the table, but cool/showery weather and lingering high-country snow make this better for scenic driving, short walks, lower trails, and flexible east-side plans than for committing to big alpine hikes.
If you have been waiting for the through-drive, this is a reasonable weekend to go. If your plan depends on Cascade Pass, Sahale Arm, Maple Pass, Blue Lake, or other higher trails feeling like July, save that version for later or go prepared for snow, wet tread, and changing weather.
