Linn County Opens Warming Stations as Arctic Air Pushes Temps to Dangerous Levels
LINN COUNTY - Linn County residents are urged to prepare for dangerously cold conditions as an arctic air mass moves into the region, bringing frigid temperatures and wind chills capable of causing frostbite and hypothermia in a short amount of time.
In response, several warming stations are available across Linn County to provide temporary relief from the cold. Officials stress that no one should attempt to “tough it out” during extreme cold, particularly seniors, individuals without reliable heat, and those experiencing homelessness.
The following warming stations are available in the Linn County area:
In Brookfield, the Linn County Council on Aging, Inc. is located at 143 Clawson Drive. Residents can call 660-258-2577 for additional information.
Also in Brookfield, Ministries in Linn County is located at 300 South Main Street. The contact phone number is 660-258-7719.
The Brookfield Public Library is serving as a warming location at 102 East Boston. The library can be reached at 660-258-7439.
In Marceline, residents may utilize the Marceline Area Nutrition Program, Inc., located at 229 W Hauser. The contact number is 660-376-3103.
Also in Marceline, the Marceline Carnegie Library is located at 119 East California Avenue. The phone number is 660-376-3223.
County officials remind residents to check on elderly neighbors, ensure pets are brought indoors, and avoid prolonged exposure to the cold. Wind chills during arctic outbreaks can cause frostbite in as little as 10 minutes.
Anyone in need of warmth or assistance is encouraged to use these resources immediately as temperatures continue to plunge. More warming stations may become open as needs may arise.
