We want you to know our area — the businesses, the people, the history, and what makes Lake Gogebic and Michigan’s Western Upper Peninsula such a special place to visit. Over the next several weeks, we’ll be highlighting our Chamber members, sharing a little history behind them, and showcasing what they have to offer.

First, but certainly not least…

🌲 WEST SHORE RESORT 🌲

A PIECE OF LAKE GOGEBIC HISTORY STILL STANDING TODAY

Dating back to the mid-1950s, West Shore Resort has long been part of the story of Lake Gogebic and Michigan’s Western Upper Peninsula. Long before modern tourism reached the area, visitors traveled north to experience the beauty, fishing, and peaceful wilderness that made Lake Gogebic famous — and resorts like West Shore helped build that tradition.

Originally known as Bailey’s Rustic Resort, West Shore Resort became a destination for generations of families, fishermen, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts looking to experience true Northwoods hospitality. Over the years, the resort has stayed true to its roots while continuing to welcome visitors from all over the Midwest.
Located along the scenic west shore of Lake Gogebic — the largest inland lake in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula — the resort has long been known for:

🎣 Incredible walleye & perch fishing
❄️ Direct snowmobile & ATV trail access
🏡 Cozy rustic cabins and lakeside relaxation
🌲 A true “Up North” atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time

From the logging and mining days of the western U.P. to today’s four-season tourism industry, places like West Shore Resort have played an important role in the history and culture of the Lake Gogebic region.

Whether you’re visiting for the fishing, the trails, the sunsets, or simply to unplug and enjoy the outdoors, West Shore Resort continues to carry on the traditions that make the Upper Peninsula so special.

Second, we have the famous Hoop’n Holler — a place that has become much more than just a tavern over the years. Tucked away along the north end of beautiful Lake Gogebic, the Hoop has grown into a true Western Upper Peninsula tradition. For decades, snowmobilers, fishermen, hunters, locals, boaters, and travelers alike have made the trip to “The Hoop” to experience the kind of Northwoods hospitality that defines Michigan’s Western U.P.

Located in the Merriweather area near the northwest shoreline of Lake Gogebic, the tavern became a well-known gathering place long before social media or tourism campaigns existed. Word traveled the old-fashioned way — through stories shared at campfires, trail stops, and lakeside cabins.

Over time, Hoop’n Holler earned its reputation as one of the region’s iconic snowmobile destinations and classic trail taverns.

Today, visitors still stop in after long rides across the Western U.P.’s extensive trail system or after days spent fishing at Michigan’s Upper Peninsula's largest inland lake. Known for hearty food, cold drinks, and a welcoming atmosphere, the tavern continues to keep the spirit of traditional Northwoods bar culture alive.

Many longtime guests say what makes the Hoop special is the history found inside its walls. Stories of old resorts, legendary snowmobile rides, fishing trips, and Lake Gogebic history have all become part of the experience.

Over the years, locals and travelers have often said that the Hoop was home to “the farthest bar stool in the Eastern Time Zone” — a saying that perfectly captures the remote Northwoods feel of the tavern. For many visitors, finally grabbing a seat at the Hoop meant they had truly arrived in the heart of Michigan’s Western Upper Peninsula.

Even today, Hoop’n Holler remains one of the most recognizable taverns around Lake Gogebic. Many refer to it as “the only Hoop in the Yoop,” a nickname that perfectly captures the tavern’s lasting place in Upper Peninsula tradition and tourism culture.

With walleye opener next weekend our local conservation officers asked if we could share this message about fishing on Lake Gogebic.

Last year the DNR proposed a slot limit on Lake Gogebic but it ultimately did not get approved. The regulations are the same as they’ve been for years: 5 fish over 15 inches. Feel free to pass the word!
